Editor's Notes

• #6 This should be a familiar concept – Distributed Computing is too complex and not sustainable given the trends on the previous chart. This is the current approach to managing apps and desktops, Installingapplications on desktops and servers …and deploying to 000s of users everywhere. [click] Then IT works to optimize the distributed computing infrastructure…stitching together all the technologies across the stack – scaling servers for web and C/S apps, building the fastest network with plenty of bandwidth, with Security added in each part of the stack. Then you work to manage it – installing apps, patching, updating, across 100s or 1000s or user machines, as well as the server infrastructure – both virtual an physical. Most businesses spend more than 80% of their IT budgets keeping their current systems running; Most spend close to 50% of their IT budgets on the care and feeding of their user’s PCs and everything associated with maintaining them. [Note both figures are Gartner research figures] Now we can see why… The technology is hard, but as most IT organizations are often structured around these technologies (network group, server group, etc.) it can be just as hard to get things done across these organizational silos…let alone make changes to improve the situation…[click] The result…it is at best complex…hard to manage…not secure…and worst, expensive to manage. And that’s before you need to make changes – add new apps, new devices, new offices, new users – it is often easier to start over. This is where most people will shake their heads and agree… there’s got to be a better way… Citrix agrees…and there is…[click to next chart]
• #7 The Ford quote is a brilliant one… it’s at the heart of the “follow the users, follow the apps” strategy I keep pushing. If you only look to your current customers and current competitors to decide what to build, you will always miss the next big innovation. If you instead look to where users are going and where apps are going, you start to see the impact of trends like Gen Y, consumerization of enterprise IT, cloud, etc that change the shape of your vision.
• #8 To adopt a cloud like mentality, we actually encourage IT leaders to look outside of the IT industry for inspiration… to look to industries who never got into the mess we have in IT through years of distributed computing complexity…Take an example like Direct TV or any of the other popular broadcast media delivery services around the world. Their model is radically different from the way most IT organizations operate today. Yet it’s exactly where we need to go as an industry.
• #30 Underlying our HDX Multimedia Virtualization Initiative is the concept of Adaptive Orchestration. Adaptive Orchestration detects underlying capabilities in the datacenter, network and device, and dynamically applies the best combination of Citrix HDX technologies in accord with administrator-defined policies to ensure a high-definition experience in each unique user scenario.Included in the XenDesktop 4 release are:GPO enabled per-URL blacklist for incompatible Flash sitesFall back to server side rendering under certain conditionsControl via GPO on per machine or per user basis
• #31 SmartRendering (patent pending) is the intelligent automated selection of client-side or server-side graphics rendering based on a number of factors. The general concept is that if the client has the horsepower to handle graphics rendering, let’s use that horsepower and conserve the shared resources on the server (otherwise the client horsepower would needlessly be underutilized), whereas let’s use server-based computing to enable lesser-equipped devices to experience rich graphics capabilities, and in cases where we don’t have a technology to support client-side rendering (e.g. QuickTime movies or OpenGL apps). SmartRendering begins with end point inspection, which now goes beyond checking for anti-virus software and patches to determining the capabilities of the device. For example, does the client have a GPU? What is the Vista Windows Experience Index (WEI)? What codecs are available? DirectShow/MF? This information might be stored for future use. SmartRendering also considers the bandwidth.
• #41 Poll Question: ‘When are you looking to deploy desktop virtualisation?’Poll was asked during various webinars 2009-2010Number of attendees: 158, 835, 248Number of voters: 121, 568, 141Comment: In Oct 2009 25% said that they were not likely to use desktop virtualisation. This changes radically by Oct/Dec 2010 (2.5% and 5%)
• #42 Poll Question: ‘When are you looking to deploy desktop virtualisation?’Poll was asked during various webinars 2009-2010Number of attendees: 158, 835, 248Number of voters: 121, 568, 141

• #44 Agility means different things to different people
• #48 GARTNER:“Consumerization will be the single biggest trend affecting corporate IT over the next 10 years.”
• #50 Poll Question: ‘What is the main business priority that is driving your interest in desktop virtualisation?’Poll was asked during ‘Virtual Desktops: A design for small environments’ webinar held on 21st October 2010. Number of attendees: 835Number of voters: 518Comment: People were only allowed to vote for one answer. This meant we were able to identify the ‘main’ reason. 30.7% said cost, but that means approx 70% said something else!
• #51 Poll Question: ‘Do you think desktop virtualisation is a tactical 'fix' or a strategic change for IT?’Poll was asked during ‘Virtual Desktops: A design for small environments’ webinar held on 21st October 2010. Number of attendees: 835Number of voters: 568Comment: When this poll was run, the attendees were given a detailed explanation of what was meant by tactical (ie to fix a problem or for a specific use case eg remote workers) and strategic (ie changes the way that IT is done in their organisation – ‘a new way of doing IT’. This is across the businesses, although may initially be deployed for a department or small group and then expanded)
