- 2. Design Narrative The phrase “Florida Cottage” conjures images of a cracker homestead with raised floors, rusted roofs and sagging porches. The architectural vocabulary of Florida’s early settler reflects a regional connection to climate and expanding lifestyles. The most common building arrangement was the "Dog-trot," consisting of two separate cabins connected by one roof. As families grew, pioneers relied heavily upon this efficient design. The apparent conflict between expanding needs and resource scarcity has inspired our concept for a “quick response” and affordable housing unit that transforms design challenges into opportunity. Our primary design feature locates a clerestory along the Northern wall in order to maximize day lighting and minimize heat gain under the Florida sun. Additionally, the building’s compact footprint (40’ length) enables the intended northern orientation on any 50’ x 120’ lot while minimizing the land required to house multiple units. All building components can be supplied by Platinum Advanced. This single source approach simplifies the project delivery process. Each floor, wall and roof panel is made of light-gage steel and reinforced with injected polyurethane foam (which increases structural strength by 50%). Although the MD satisfies program requirements as a single unit, double-pen arrangements provide the option for expanding household space. Copyright © 2008. The Schimberg Group, Inc.
