3. OF THE
YEAR
Votes have been cast, ballots have been tallied and
the winners of SRQ’s 4th Annual Home of the Year
competition are officially, well, official. Our 2008
winners are some of the most innovative architects,
builders and designers in Sarasota’s burgeoning new
school. Inspired by Sarasota’s modern heritage and
unique natural beauty—the aptly named Schrock-
Solstice House, for example, faces the direction of the
summer solstice—winners competed in five cate-
gories including Kitchen, Outdoor Area, Bathroom,
Overall Home $2 million and under and Overall
Home over $2 million. Local professionals submitted
photography, floor plans and concept statements
representing their best work in home design to com-
pete for SRQ Home’s Platinum, Gold and Silver
Awards. SRQ selected a panel of expert judges from
outside the Sarasota-Manatee area, the contest juris-
diction, to participate.
We invite you to take an exclusive tour of SRQ
Home’s winning residences. In the pages that follow,
one Sarasota School of Architecture home gets a his-
toric facelift, a modest pool house embraces modern
and expands living space, and water elements and
lush, tropical landscapes bring the outdoors inside.
But, first, meet our judges.

CANAL FRONT RESIDENCE
THE SCHIMBERG GROUP
This 4,000 square-foot residence was certified and designed under Florida Green
Building Standards with zero wasted space, passive cooling, highly efficient
mechanical systems (e.g., low flow fixtures and a tankless water heater with recir-
culation pump) and environmental materials—recycled glass and tile, natural
basalt stone and cypress planks—throughout. By positioning the house on the site
to maximize the beautiful views of Sarasota Bay and the surrounding canal, the
architect was able to take a pavilion concept used with modern elements to create
an environmentally sustainable, custom home. Exterior walls extend beyond con-
necting perpendicular walls, directing one’s eye towards the water. The house,
located in a FEMA zone, was scaled appropriately for the neighborhood by placing
the second story bedrooms over the garage, keeping the remaining house to a sin-
gle story. The five-foot-high foundation is painted a greenish color to blend it into
the landscape allowing the house to float and appear less massive. The use of
basalt stone carries through the house, from the mailbox and a centralized archi-
tectural wall to the exterior in a disappearing edge pool wall, and unites the home’s
sensual experience from beginning to end.
