1. Photographing glassware
is an exquisite dance
between light reflecting
off the surface and
light coming through
to show color and depth.

2. Room sets are always a challenge.
There is a range of surfaces, shapes
that need to illustrated in the midst
of establishing a mood and a sense
of light quality. Advanced technical
skill is a good starting point but a
mature eye for light makes the
difference between a good shot
and a fantastic photograph.

3. All commercial
photography
is about selling
a product.
The approaches
for doing this range from
straight forward
illustration to creating
a mood that the
potential client desires.
The best work does both.

4. Location work requires a lot of
planning and an ability to time
the shot for the best light.
The sun won’t stop moving
because something isn’t quite right.

5. Food photography can
be intimidating. Cooking for
taste we all do but cooking
for appearance requires
an experienced food stylist
and a photographer who
can be ready when
the food is.
It takes good communication
with the Art Director
the stylist, and the
photographer to make sure
all of the components come
together at the same time.

6. Live food photography
is all about having the
experience to set up
a situation where success
is determined by timing
and the judgment to know
when you got the shot.

7. Soft goods
require a
gentle touch.
The sense that
there is one light
source is usually
the best look.
Whether or not
I use more than
one light is
my secret.

8. Creativity must be exercised.
Even the most stoic and reserved client
needs to see something different
once in awhile.

9. Playfulness.
It is a key ingredient in a happy life.
It is also a key ingredient to longevity in
the business of photography.
When a photographer forgets
how to play with the medium then their
time left in the business will be short lived.
