Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen!!!!
First off, Happy Easter and I hope
y’all are enjoying your alumni
weekend. Now before I go any further
can I take a second to say something
really quick? Y’all look absolutely
stunning!!! Wow!!! Give yourselves a
round of applause.
****APPLAUSE****
We are so happy y’all could take part
in this night with us tonight. Thank
you to those in our studio audience
and to our viewers at home, we really
appreciate all your support; because
Without it none of this would be
possible. Now it is with great pride
I once again welcome you to the 9th
Annual James E. Dykes Communicator
Awards Banquet being broadcast live
from the spectacular NEW studio here
in the Leroy and Lois Peters Media
Center, located on the historic campus
of Oakwood University. Now if that
doesn’t get you excited for what the
rest of the night has to offer I don’t
know what will. I’ve got goosebumps
just talking about it; I’m beyond
excited. Now I don’t know if you all
noticed that my intro song was the
theme from Jurassic Park; I chose
to use that song for 2 reasons. 1.
Jurassic Park is the best movie ever
put to film. 2. I chose this song in
particular because when I first saw the
new studio I was instantly reminded of
one of the characters in the film, a
billionaire named John Hammond. John
Hammond was a man with vision who
invested in those around him to create
a place that could show the world
marvelous things that it had never seen
before. His catchphrase was “Spare No
Expense”, which he did. He was intent
on sharing this vision so that other
might be inspired to do the same.
We, as a school and as a department
should consider ourselves immensely
blessed that people with great visions
for the future and whose continued
investments make projects like this
remarkable building a reality. Like the
Dykes family *point them out if they’re
present*, the Peters family *point them
out if they’re present*, Jonathan B.
Dulan and all numerous other generous
individuals willing to invest in the

When Johannes Gutenburg applied ink
to a series of blocks and pressed the
first printed sheet of paper he not
only changed the course of history but
also laid the first stone on the path
towards what brought us all here today.
When Peter Williams, along with other
free men, published "Freedom Journal",
the first African-American periodical,
he understood the importance of Print
Journalism; a vehicle for getting the
voices normally ignored heard. Often
neglected in superpowers, other world
countries like Bahrain, Yemen, & Syria
free press is banned giving no voice to
the oppressed. Journalists risk their
lives and, more often than not, their
careers to bring you the stories from
Refugees seeking aslyum from war torn
countries, to new advancement in modern
medicine and technology. While the
common 21st millinual would classify
print journalism as dead, discrediting
the countless hours drafters,copy
editors, editors in chef’s, and
hundreds of other workers in the field
of print journalism put in to make
even the smallest publication come
to fruition, we don’t. The following
nominees are students who show talent
and scholastic aptitude in Print
journalism understanding the amount of
dedication it takes to achieve success.
One day, in the not too distant future,
these students will lend a voice to the
voiceless.

to comprehend but 2005 was 11 years
ago!It honestly feels like it was
just yesterday that it was perfectly
acceptable to walk around in public

boots and an ironic trucker hat;
#STUNTIN’,but time flies when you’re
growing up or if you’re like Jessica
Brazier when you’re always working.
From the time she arrived on the campus
of Oakwood University she heavily
involved in student activities like
the United Student Movement and the
Spreading Oak. Although not initially
a Communication major she was advised
to do so after numerous of her teacher
noticed her natural gift for public
speaking. The skills she learned during
her time at Oakwood have proven to be
invaluable; These skills coupled with
her adherence to her personal motto
of Phil 4:13 prove that with faith in
God and a strong work ethic there’s
truly nothing you can’t do. Even as a
student she was committed to a standard
of excellence which is just one of the
numerous reason Jessica Brazier is
our Alumni honoree. Later on tonight
we will be presenting her with her

The goal of the photojournalist is
simple, deliver quintessential visual
expression, timeless in it’s nature,
by capturing the moment that can’t
be re-created. Six men rallying
to raise the American flag over
Iwo Jima’s Mount Surbachi, amid a
vicious clash below between opposing
forces. A lone protester facing off
against the tanks of the People’s
Liberation Army, taking a direct
stand against the maliciousness of
war. Muhammad Ali standing over a
vanquished Sonny Liston, one minute
and forty-four seconds into the first
round. Every image, each as iconic
as the last, resonates within as
you, for a moment, put yourself in
the shoes of the photographer and
experience an appareled view into
moments immortalized. They say a
picture is worth a thousand words
and for our next group of nominees
creating “topics of conversation” is
as easy as working a point and shoot.

Public relations in a classical
sense in over. 20 years ago, wire
taps and on air blunders were enemy
number one. Now, one picture post,
tweet or out of context statement
is etched on your character profile
for life. In PR you are the safety
net, catching falling CEO’s after
tweeting, drunkenly, about
endeavors accomplished the night
before on a government twitter or
when your boss crowns the wrong
miss universe on national
television. Or worse your company
places U2’s album on millions of
devices agains their will. PR isn’t
all white knuckle, crisis
management 24-7. Well executed and
skillfully planned PR campaigns can
be beneficial to the growth of a
company. For example, summer 2014
brought us the ALS Ice Bucket
Challenge, you know, the one where
you dump freezing ice on your head
in the name of charity, it garnered
a hefty social media presence
eventually leading to a successful
run and raising millions for the
cause. Or Coke-a-cola’s 2015
“summer of sharing” campaign where
they put the 250 most popular names
on the sides of coke bottles
instantly registering millions of
his world wide on social media. It
seems PR has found its niche in the
digital era; and these nominees are

News never sleeps subsequently, and
some of you can attest to this, neither
does anyone in broadcast journalism.
It takes a resilient person to pursue a
career in broadcast. On one hand, you
to truly see the elements of a hectic
world and on the other, the feeling you
get from a great humanitarian piece
affirms you that it’s all actually
worth it. Broadcast stretches the
limits, doing more than just bringing
the family together in the living
room, it becomes apart of the culture.
When Americans saw the first visceral
images of Vietnam, being broadcast into
their homes a spark was ignited in the
belly of the nation and the thirst
for revolution had to quenched. When
the Challenger spacecraft exploded
the nation watched frozen-stunned by
the images they saw being broadcast
into their home. Gripped by anger,
confusion, and sadness many of us in
here tonight watched as our nation fell
to terrorists attacks on September
11th. And many more of us watched
elated and in joy as our nations
first African American President swore
into office. We remember the emotion
we felt, and that emotion is what
connects each of us. Although over
the past 10 years the global mindset
has transitioned to live in what we
call an on demand world; you watch what
you want to when you want to, listen
to what you want to when you want
to, broadcast journalism is advancing
stride for stride. What was once daily
news CNN made 24hrs, and with the
advent of the internet broadcast has
yet again extended its reach from the
living room of your home to the palm
of your hand. Here are your nominees
for Broadcast Journalism Student of the
year.

There’s a Japanese proverb that
says “Better than a thousand days of
diligent study is one day with a great
teacher”. Teaching is a profession
that in this country is drastically
undervalued. It takes a special kind of
person to be an eductor. Only a select
few individuals possess the necessary
passion for learning, devotion to their
students, and above all patience. I
can’t stress that last one hard enough.
My heart goes out to any teacher
in America who went to college got
their bachelor’s, then their master,
and in some cases their Doctorates,
only to have some 19 year old kid you
who barely comes to class;and they do
they’re in the back of the classroom
on the snaptwitbookgram or whatever
the kids are into these day, tell you
to your face that you don’t know how
to do your job when they failed the
class...That makes you the real MVP in
my book. So tonight we are going to try
and make up for some of the headaches;
and hopefully score some extra credit
points for the final; by present a
truly exemplary faculty member with
THE FACULTY OF THE YEAR AWARD. This
award is given based on the votes of
the student nominees; And the winner is

WOW! THIS EVENING WAS TRULY
EXTRAORDINARY!!!! Now before we wrap
up the program and go our separate way
I would like to take moment to give a
closing thought. Tonight was a night
of celebration and recognition for
all the hard work the nominees and
Jessica Brazier have done. All these
individuals are are shining examples
of what sowing seed of hard work will
yield. For all the winners enjoy it
tonight you earned it!! But understand
this just because you won tonight
doesn’t mean you can start slacking
off. In fact it mean you must push
yourselves even harder to maintain
that high standard of excellence.
Don’t let victory defeat you. Finally
a word of advice that I have always
found helpful, my pastor always tells
me you can control your choices but
you can’t control your consequences.
Make good choice, keep perfecting your
craft, and greatness will follow. Can
we get one more a round of applause for
our amazing Students!!!
*****APPLAUSE*****
Thank you Ms. Jessica Brazier; can we
please get a round of applause for her?

Finally before we close I want to
issue a challenge to all the young
communicator that will take the place
of senior like me when we leave. My
challenge is simple, be better than
us. There is simply no imaginable
excuse why the classes that follow
us shouldn’t make this DEPT. and the
banquet better the years that preceded
them. Is it going to be easy? No,but
anything worth having in life is seldom
attained without putting forth any
effort. There are going to be moments
when you doubt yourself and you’ll want
to make an excuse and give up.it is in
those moments I urge you to remember
these small bits of advice. Don’t get
in the habit of making excuses. Excuse
are nothing more than the tools of the
incompetence use to build monuments
of nothingness and those that use them
seldom amount to anything. Furthermore
