  INSTRUCTOR
  Mohamed A. El-Sharkawi, Fellow, IEEE
Mohamed A. El-Sharkawi received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1980. That same
year, he became a faculty member at the University of Washington, where he is presently a professor of electrical engineering.
He has also served as associate chair and as chairman of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.
During the past 30 years, Mohamed has taught courses on power systems, electric safety, transmission lines, electromagnetic
transients, electric drives, and power electronics. He has organized and chaired numerous conferences, panels, and special
sessions in IEEE and other professional organizations. He has published over 200 papers and book chapters in his research
areas and holds five licensed patents. He has authored two textbooks, Fundamentals of Electric Drives and Electric Energy: An
Introduction. He served as an electric safety consultant and expert witness for OSHA, WISHA, and several other organizations.

  • 1. EUCI Presents a Course on: REACTIVE POWER, VOLTAGE STABILITY, AND CONTROL September 27-28, 2012 • Hyatt Regency Atlanta • Atlanta, GA EUCI is authorized by IACET to offer 1.0 CEUs for this program.
  • 2. REACTIVE POWER, VOLTAGE STABILITY, AND CONTROL September 27-28, 2012 OVERVIEW IACET In today’s power grid, reactive power causes more blackouts than poor damping and EUCI has energy instability combined. Reactive power problems are more severe for heavily loaded been transmission systems and when equipment with high demands for reactive power, such approved as wind turbines and arc furnaces, are utilized. The cyclic nature of reactive power in as an Authorized Provider some equipment adds more challenges for utility engineers when classic solutions cannot by the International effectively address the problem. Association for Continuing This course is designed to cover the concept of reactive power, its impact on system losses Education and Training and grid voltage, the concept of voltage collapse, the planning of reactive power, the (IACET), 1760 Old Meadow Road, Suite 500, cyclic problem of reactive power, and classic and advanced methods for compensating for McLean, VA 22102. In reactive power in utility systems. obtaining this approval, EUCI has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standards, LEARNING OUTCOMES which are widely • Concepts of AC systems recognized as standards • Real and reactive powers of good practice • Power factor of loads internationally. • Consumption and production of reactive power As a result of their • The link between reactive power and system voltage Authorized Provider • Voltage collapse membership status, • The impact of reactive power on utility grids and loads EUCI is authorized to • The cyclic reactive power and voltage flickers offer IACET CEUs for its • Methods to compensate for system reactive power and improvement of power factor programs that qualify • Regulations and compliances under the ANSI/IACET Standards. EUCI is authorized by WHO SHOULD ATTEND IACET to offer 1.0 CEUs • Utility technicians and engineers for this program. • Field technicians and engineers Requirements for • Manufacturing technicians and engineers Successful Completion • System operators of Program • Maintenance crew and engineers Participants must sign in/out each day and be • Energy producers technicians and engineers in attendance for the • Consultants and researchers in conventional and renewable energy entirety of the course to be eligible for continuing education credit. Instructional Methods PowerPoint presentations, classroom discussions, and question-and-answer sessions will be used in this course. 2

El-Sharkawi, Fellow, IEEE Mohamed A. El-Sharkawi received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1980. That same year, he became a faculty member at the University of Washington, where he is presently a professor of electrical engineering. He has also served as associate chair and as chairman of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. During the past 30 years, Mohamed has taught courses on power systems, electric safety, transmission lines, electromagnetic transients, electric drives, and power electronics. He has organized and chaired numerous conferences, panels, and special sessions in IEEE and other professional organizations. He has published over 200 papers and book chapters in his research areas and holds five licensed patents. He has authored two textbooks, Fundamentals of Electric Drives and Electric Energy: An Introduction. He served as an electric safety consultant and expert witness for OSHA, WISHA, and several other organizations. 3
