The Colossus of Rhodes was a giant statue built in 292 BC in Rhodes, Greece to celebrate the city's victory in war against Cyprus. It was constructed under the sculptor Chares of Lindos using funds from the defeated army. The massive bronze statue straddled the harbor entrance but was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC, snapping at the knees. Remains of the fallen Colossus were never rebuilt despite offers to do so, eventually being sold off.
