Florida, Heather Lueke Smith is board-certified
in local government law, and
currently serves as an assistant county
attorney for the Saint Lucie County Board of
County Commissioners in Fort Pierce. In her
spare time, Heather Lueke Smith volunteers
for the Radio Reading Service on 88.9
WQCS, an activity she participates in every
other week.
3. Previously funded by the government, the
Radio Reading Service is comprised of
volunteers who donate their time to read
and record readings of local newspapers
and publications for the blind or the visually
and physically impaired. Established in
January of 1995, the service allows qualified
listeners to receive information on current
news and events through a pre-tuned or
closed-circuit receiver.
4. To be eligible for the service, a listener
must submit an application completed
by a doctor, social worker, or health
care professional which indicates that
the applicant is print-handicapped from
a visual or other physical disability, such
as a stroke or cerebral palsy.
