Roller Coaster Fun
Student Guide
FLIP-IT
Focus
The topic is
roller coasters.
What do you
already know?
Build a model
roller coaster
using K’NEXs.
Links
Link the project to
other subjects. Pick
your favorite real-life
coaster and decide
what to use when
searching.
Input
Investigate to find
information and
organize it.
Decide how to
present and what
angle you will
use to sell your
coaster.
Payoff
Share your
understanding
with others in
your
presentation.
Remember to FLIP-IT when necessary... you can go back and forth between
steps. Use IT (Intelligent Thinking) every step of the way!!
Your topic is roller coasters...
brainstorm everything you already
know about them. Write it all down...
Use your science notebooks. These notes will not
be handed in; they are for you to use to prepare your
presentation.
Choose and build your roller coaster
following very specific instructions.
Make sure it has 5 measurable slopes
and work as a team.
Focus
IT = Intelligent
Thinking
Are you analyzing
and evaluating?
Links
Math
*Measure your 5 slopes.
*Create an equation for each.
*Put measurements/equations into
a graphic organizer, attach
to checklist to turn in.
Science
Force/Motion
*Does the coaster run?
English
*Did you follow the written instructions?
Choose a favorite
real-life coaster
(one per group).
What keywords
will you use to
search for
information?
IT = Intelligent Thinking
If your coaster runs poorly,
analyze the issue.
Input
Investigate resources
for your chosen roller
coaster.

Organize information, use
the hard-copy checklist.
Decide how you want to
“sell” your coaster for
your presentation.
Pick a presentation format
that can be shared online
in some way.
IT = Intelligent
Thinking
Evaluate sources
Student project checklist for INPUT... you have a hard
copy with everything you need for your project. Put all
information on the checklist to hand in for a grade.
IT = Intelligent
Thinking
Analyze your
information
Item needed: Check if done

online in some form?
Do you know who will do what during the
presentation?
Payoff
You are a roller coaster designer...
Time to share what you’ve learned
by convincing someone to buy your
coaster.
* Decide who does what for the presentation
(engineer, aesthetics, presenter, camera, etc.)
* Work in all necessary information, but try to keep it
interesting.
* Are you missing information? FLIP back to another
step and fix it.

Evaluate your
coaster... would you
buy it?
