This document provides 4 steps to prevent the spread of dengue: 1) Search and destroy mosquito breeding places by removing containers that can hold water, checking stored water for larvae, and avoiding plants that can trap water. 2) Take self-protection measures like using screens and insect repellent. 3) Seek early medical consultation if experiencing fever and rashes for more than 2 days as complications can develop. 4) Support fogging during outbreaks as it can help reduce mosquito populations but is not effective as a long term solution on its own.

2. 1. SEARCH AND DESTROY BREEDING
PLACES
 Throw away, turn over, empty any container and old tires
that may accumulate rain water
 Change water and clean flower vases every week
 Always place a tight lid on containers used for water storage

3.  Check that there are no mosquito larvae
or pupae (kiti-kiti) in stored water
 Avoid planting Bromeliads or any plant
that could accumulate rain water

4. 2. SELF-PROTECTION MEASURES
 Use screens on doors and windows
 Wear long sleeves shirts, long pants, socks, and closed shoes
to avoid mosquito bites at dust & dawn especially
 Use repellant’s containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide)
or Picaridin on your clothing anf exposed skin. Follow the
manufacturer’s instructions.

5. 3. SEEK EARLY CONSULTATION
 If you or a family members has fever of 2 days duration
and rashes on the skin, consult your physician or visit
the nearest health facility
 If it is dengue, serious complications of the disease can
develop. If the complications are recognized early, and
a doctor is consulted, it may save the patient’s life

6. 4. SAY YES TO FOGGING IN TIMES
OF IMPENDING OUTBREAK
 Yes to fogging only during outbreaks
 Fogging operations fail because these merely drive
away mosquitoes to other areas
