Electronic communication has dramatically changed healthcare through increased online access to information for both patients and providers. Patients can email doctors, access medical records, and manage health information online. Doctors can consult other providers electronically, access records and test results, and communicate directly with patients. A case study shows how a patient emails his symptoms to a new doctor and they are able to diagnose and treat him remotely without unnecessary tests or medications through use of the patient's medical history and public health databases. However, barriers still exist to wider adoption of electronic communication, including lack of reimbursement and a "digital divide" where internet access varies across age, income, education and other demographic factors.
