Information on engineering motors for variable-speed drives
What has to be observed when engineering drive converter motors?
Utilized according to temperature rise Class F or de-rating for temperature rise Class B.
A wide speed control range is utilized (up to 0 Hz)
Self-ventilated motors are de-rated by up to 50%
Or a separately-driven fan is used: 1PQ, option G17
A rotary pulse encoder is used for high speed accuracy
Ratio of the power ratings, motor/drive converter
Min 1/4 for Vector or 1/8 for V/f; max 3/2
Capacitive re-charging currents demand:
Good grounding and if possible, shielded motor cables
Motor windings with the appropriate voltage strength (standard for Siemens motors up to
500V) or the use of motor filters (dV/dt or SINUSOIDAL)
For 690V motors with increased voltage strength: ..PM.
Insulated bearings from SH 280 option L27 or standard for 1LA8
Note the maximum cable length to the motor
In hazardous zones:
Explosion-protected motors for class of protection, flameproof enclosure EEx de IIC.
Utilized according to temperature Class B
Motors must be equipped with PTC thermistors.
Drive converter with evaluation devices in accordance with PTB (L83, L84)
Terminal boxes are as standard in Class of protection, increased safety EEx e II.
In addition to the EC type-test examination, a general certificate of conformance is
required for drive converter operation. (ATEX)

Pmax
M ~ n²
For drive converter operation, the
standard 1LA and 1LG motors can
provide the full rated power. They
are then utilized according to
temperature rise Class F.
If the motors are only to be used
according to temperature rise
Class B, then they must be de-
rated by 10 %

Increased voltage stressing
Line supply voltage >500V
Either select a motor with increased insulation strength: M

Note the lower power de-rating!
Output filters limit
the voltage rate-of-rise dv/dt to values < 500V/µs and typical voltage spikes to <1000V
for Vline supply < 575V and <1150V for Vline supply < 690V.
Line supply voltage < 500V
Siemens standard motors have the leading
edge Durignit ® IR 2000 insulating system
(IR = Inverter Resistant).
They are inverter proof up to 500V.

Bearing currents and motor size
Bearing currents
AC drive converters with PWM generate re-charging currents. Especially for large
motors, under worst-case conditions - e.g. longer periods of operation at low
frequencies – the bearings could be damaged.
The first measure is to use shielded motor cables and use good grounding.
An additional measure is to use insulated bearings at the non-drive end:
1LA8 for drive converter operation: Standard
1LG4/6 from frame size 280: Can be ordered using option L278
Motor – drive converter combination
Rated motor current as a ratio to the rated drive converter current:
For closed-loop Vector control minimum 1/4
For V/f open-loop control minimum 1/8
Rated motor current at the maximum, the same as the maximum overload current
of the drive converter: Otherwise possible trip or power reduction if there are
significant current spikes on low-inductance motors
