3rd grade writing expectations final

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Third grade standards focus on 3 main genres of writing, narrative, opinion/persuasion, and informative/explanatory. Narratives require students to express ideas using vivid words and descriptions. Narratives can be personal events or made up stories. Opinion/persuasion writing require students to state their opinion and using support details. Informative/Explanatory writing requires the student to use facts to create an informative piece or to create a step by step paper explaining a process.
  • #4 Skills that are listed in the 3rd grade writing standards include those list. The skills assist the student in creating logical, organize, in-depth writing. It requires the student to think about what they are writing and use a variety of sentence types and word and sentence variation through out their writing. By 3rd grade most students can get their ideas down on paper, however, it is still a challenge to make it into a logical and coherent piece of writing.
  • #5 The standards also list requirement for final drafts and production. It states that the teacher should guide the students writing in choosing topics, planning, revising, and editing. Conferencing is one way that this can be accomplished. The students are responsible for attempting to independently write their pieces, but we should guide them to complete the task correctly. Students are also encouraged to type their writings and work collaboratively on some of their writing pieces.
  • #6 Writing should take place each day at some levels. We have listed some examples of daily writing activities as well as Writing Task. Daily writing activities should be short and quick. They should reinforce skills learned during writing task or they can focus on a specific part of the writing process. Writing task are our longer activities, it may take a day or sometimes weeks to complete these task depending on the type of task. The completion of these task should show the students understanding of the complete writing process.
