Alcoi was historically a Catalan-speaking town, but began adopting Castilian Spanish over time as the language of administration and education under the Crown of Castile. The shift accelerated in the later 20th century under Franco's regime which suppressed Catalan culture and promoted Spanish nationwide. Nowadays, both Catalan and Spanish coexist in Alcoi, though Spanish has become more dominant in daily life.
