A talk from the Work Track at AWE USA 2017 - the largest conference for AR+VR in Santa Clara, California May 31- June 2, 2017.
Andreas Zeitler (Vuframe): Virtual & Augmented Business: How to Discover and Leverage Immersive DataYou Already Own.
A good, practical and user-friendly Augmented or Virtual Reality application can provide clear return on investment for many businesses. Adopting software-driven solutions while the hardware in the market matures will give you a competitive edge while others are still catching up. However, there's still a major roadblock: where do you get data in the formats required for AR & VR? Realtime 3D, 360 Media, Point Cloud Data are neither cheap nor easy to come by – especially when it needs to be highly optimized to run on portable devices with limited battery life and performance. This workshop will illustrate how data which already exists in a lot of businesses can be leveraged in the age of Augmented and Virtual Reality. We will uncover which data sources already exist in your company and how you can deploy them as part of a cutting-edge virtual tool – within days, not weeks or months.

3D Printing is projected as the next industrial revolution and it can potentially influence almost every aspect of our daily life in some way. The missing link or bottleneck in computer aided product development is prototyping or product manufacturing. New development in 3D printing such as digital material takes product development to newer heights. Functional 3D products with complex shapes for novel functionality can be manufactured right at your desktop. Self-replicating 3D printing machines can revolutionize the industrial manufacturing from linear to nonlinear growth. For end customers, 3D printing technology enables complex, intricate design and high cost production products, custom made.
This webinar will start with an overview of 3D printing technology. The parametric CAD model design methodology in COMSOL for 3D printing will be given. Material modelling for evaluating various materials such as polymers, composites, metals, ceramics and hybrid materials, suitable for 3D Printing will be detailed. Resistive, laser and inductive heating simulations for effective thermal processing will be highlighted. A wide range of 3D printed products from molecular models to consumer products which are engineered using Multiphysics CAE will be showcased.
This document provides an overview of the history and development of CAD/CAM technology:
- Dr. Patrick Hanratty is considered the "Father of CAD/CAM" for pioneering contributions in the 1950s. Early CAD systems in the late 1970s had limited memory and storage.
- Major milestones include the first solid modeling system in 1981, the announcements and releases of influential CAD programs like AutoCAD, CATIA, and Pro/ENGINEER between 1982-1989, and the growth of CAD users and functionality through the 1990s-2000s.
- Today's product development faces challenges of innovating faster while ensuring quality, and overcoming barriers between design/engineering/manufacturing teams through integrated digital
The document summarizes the specifications of a Shopbot CNC machine. It lists the materials used in construction as plywood, foam insulation, and HDPE. The machine has a 600 x 450 x 180 mm bed size and can read various 2D and 3D file formats. It also provides guidelines for using VCarve software for tool paths and settings like spindle speed, feed rate, cut depth, and step-over distance when operating the CNC machine.

The document discusses a furniture design project that aims to create a dual-purpose table. The designer considered multiple options before settling on a design with sliding parts that can be used on the top or bottom levels. Production was not fully completed due to machine problems, but the designer intends to modify the design after addressing these issues.
The document discusses a project involving furniture design for home use. The author spent a significant amount of time sketching and considering different design possibilities as they were unsure of what to make initially. The project is currently in development.

The document discusses relationships between DNA and the golden ratio/Fibonacci sequence. It notes that the dimensions of the DNA double helix spiral, including the major and minor grooves, exhibit ratios that approximate phi. DNA sequences can be divided into sections of Fibonacci lengths that exhibit resonant proportions. The golden ratio appears throughout nature, including in pentagonal symmetry and patterns in plants and marine life.
1. The document discusses using laser cutting and press-fitting techniques to assemble functional furniture and models from small pieces of wood.
2. A table design is presented that uses press-fitting to join four main parts - two rectangular bases (a and b), a circular top (c), and a circular glass top (d).
3. Additional exercises explore using different shapes, like circles and arrows, press-fitted together to represent movement and direction, with the goal of combining eight pieces in different configurations.
The document summarizes activities done from September 16th to 24th, including a distance lecture on digital fabrication, global discussions, introducing works to the class, an introduction on using Moodle and blogging, student presentations on self-reproducing machines, and a visit to FabLab Barcelona which has rooms for modeling and prototype building that use machines like a laser cutter, 3D printer, CNC milling machine, and 3D scanner.

One Digital clothing uses electronic lights to allow the wearer to change the style of their clothing. The lighting accessories for clothing should consider aesthetics, functionality, problem solving, durability, comfort, safety, cost, innovation, styles, and fashion. Basic styles of clothing could be adapted to allow changing colors using the lights, while still addressing ergonomic factors and comfort, safety, and weather conditions.
