Vasco Da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who was the first European to reach India by sea route. This expedition marked the beginning of an era where the Portuguese established a long-lasting colonial empire in Asia and trade links between Europe and Asia.
Calicut is a city located in India. It is the capital city of the Kerala state on the Malabar Coast. Calicut was an important trading port and center of the Indian spice trade for several centuries.
Aden is a port city located on the northern coast of Yemen on the Gulf of Aden. It has a population of around 800,000 people and was once an important trading hub due to its strategic location along major shipping routes. However, Aden has faced economic and security challenges in recent decades including civil unrest and conflict.
Ternate is an island located in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. It was once the center of a powerful sultanate and spice trade, controlling the production of cloves and nutmeg. Today, Ternate remains an important agricultural center known for its cloves, nutmeg, and fishing industry.
Francisco De Almeida was a Portuguese nobleman and explorer who served as the first governor and viceroy of the Portuguese Indian Ocean possessions. He established Portuguese hegemony in the Indian Ocean by constructing fortresses in Portuguese-controlled areas and defeating Arab, Persian and local Indian fleets in battle. However, his term as governor ended when he died in battle against the Sultan of Bijapur in 1510, securing Portuguese control over trade in the region but at the cost of his own life.
Alfonso De Albuquerque was a Portuguese general and statesman who served as the third Governor of Portuguese India from 1509 to 1515. During his tenure as governor, he established a unified command of the Portuguese colonial empire in Asia and fortified coastal strongholds in India, the Persian Gulf, and the Malay Archipelago to defend Portugal's Asian trade monopoly. De Albuquerque laid the foundations for Portugal's eastern empire and played an important role in the early European colonialization of Asia.
