The Russian military occupation of Crimea is now complete, as Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from the peninsula. Russian flags have been raised at all 193 former Ukrainian military bases in Crimea. While around 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers remained loyal to Ukraine, many others switched allegiance to the Russian-backed Crimean authorities. The withdrawal comes after weeks of pressure and attacks by Russian forces against Ukrainian troops. As a result of the occupation, Ukraine has lost over half of its naval vessels, including 51 ships seized by Russia. The Open Dialog Foundation criticizes the Ukrainian government's decision not to introduce martial law or authorize military resistance during the occupation. They are urging support for the soldiers and families withdrawing from Crimea.
