This study uses regression analysis to examine the relationship between state-level firearm death rates in the US and several independent variables representing prevailing theories about the causes of gun deaths. The analysis finds that states with weaker gun laws and higher unemployment rates have statistically significant higher firearm death rates, while personal income, mental illness rates, and income inequality were not significant predictors. This provides support for the argument that lax gun regulation and poor economic conditions contribute to higher rates of gun deaths in the US.
The document discusses the ongoing debate around gun control in America. It references several mass shootings over the past 15 years and notes how gun control is debated after each one. However, it argues that less gun legislation is needed and that guns themselves are not to blame - it is the person behind the trigger. It cites evidence from studies that found no link between strict gun laws and lower murder/crime rates. Overall the document makes the case that controlling violent individuals is more important than controlling guns, and that banning guns would not solve violence since people will find other weapons.
Stricter gun laws mean lower rates of gun-related deaths in childrenΔρ. Γιώργος K. Κασάπης
States with stricter gun laws had lower rates of gun-related deaths in children, according to new research. Scientists looked at more than 21,000 gun deaths in children between 2011 and 2015 in states that implemented stricter gun laws — such as universal background checks for ammunition and gun purchases — and found that these states had a 4% lower rate of gun-related deaths in children than states without such laws. States that had universal background checks for firearm purchases had an 11% lower rate of children dying from firearms — and if the law was in place for five or more years, that rate was 35%.
The document summarizes the key points of debate around gun control legislation. It discusses the sociological, ethical, and legal dimensions being debated, including the effectiveness of gun laws and interpretation of Second Amendment rights. Supporters argue stricter laws could reduce gun violence based on statistics from other countries with strict laws and background checks could respect gun rights. Opponents counter that statistics don't prove regulation reduces crime and that additional laws could infringe on constitutional rights. Alternative policies proposed include assault weapons bans and background checks. The implications for families and society are also debated.

This document discusses gun violence and gun control from a public health perspective. It provides data on the global burden of firearm injuries and deaths. In the US, firearm deaths exceed 48,000 annually, with over half being suicides. States with higher gun ownership rates have higher firearm suicide rates. While the 2nd Amendment addresses gun rights, gun control opponents are heavily funded by the powerful NRA lobby. There are strong arguments both for and against gun control. Treating gun violence as a public health issue, prevention strategies could integrate population-based and high-risk interventions using a social ecological model to address individual, relationship, community and societal risk factors.
Firearm suicide among the elderly poses a serious challenge to public health. One of the greatest barriers to finding a solution to this problem is the highly politicized and bipartisan nature of the gun control debate. This paper studies the underlying risk factors contributing to suicide and existing legislation to develop recommendations for reducing firearm suicide among the elderly. Various databases were searched for evidence of successful interventions including PscyhInfo, PubMed and Scopus. The search criteria were limited to studies published within the U.S. between 2008 and 2018. Based on available evidence, the social ecological model provides the best intervention for reducing firearm suicide and firearm mortality among the target population through small interventions at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, community and societal levels.

Unit 1: What Is Nursing Informatics?
From Instructor:
The definition of nursing informatics varies with the source you go with. ‘Nursing informatics is defined as the combination of nursing science, information science, and computer science’ (McGonigle & Mastria, 2015, p. 5) is the definition our course text uses. The American Nurses Association (ANA), defines nursing informatics as ‘the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice’ (ANA, 2016). The complexity of nursing informatics resulted in the ANA defining Nursing Informatics’ scope and standards currently in its second edition (ANA, 2014). What initially started with automating processes to achieve efficiency and streamline, such as converting paper documentation into an electronic format, has evolved into a specialty and for many a business. One such business, with a vested interest, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), a North American organization whose mission is to have the best use of information and technology, defines nursing informatics (NI) as ‘the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the interprofessional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision-making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology’.
In my acute care setting, nursing informatics is everywhere to include: electronic health record, use of digital equipment to monitor patients such as cardiac monitoring or even a thermometer whose reading can be transferred immediately to the medical record, to patients access to their own medical record upon discharge. These examples do not do justice to the depth and breadth informatics plays in nursing, which we will continue to learn in this course. Even though digitalizing the medical record was a requirement initially set out in the acute care setting, other areas such as home care, dialysis centers and even skilled nursing facilities are following suits. Does your own provider offer your medical record electronically? Have you been hospitalized and accessed your records? I look forward to hearing how you have seen, or used, nursing informatics in place in your clinicals, job or as a visitor to a healthcare setting.

Gun control
Increasing restrictions on the civilian possession of guns is the channel to go regarding the reduction of crimes in America. Guns should be regulated from those who pursue to harm others and assessable to those who are qualified to protect our country
.
Gun control is a controversial topic that provokes different emotions in people. Conversely, firearms are classified into three types: handguns, rifles, and shotguns. To understand the intensity of the topic, it is important to understand which population of America have direct access to firearms. Based on a survey data conducted in 2014, out of a population of 319 million people, there were 371 million firearms owned by private citizens and domestic law enforcement. Out of this, approximately 146 million were handguns. Handguns in this case comprised 52% of all guns sold to civilians (Miller, 2002). The levels of gun ownership were scattered in different groups partitioned as:
· Males: 45%
· Females: 15%
· Nonwhite: 22%
· Whites: 33%
· Independent: 31%
· Democrat: 22%
The logic behind gun ownership for 60% of the population was for protection against crime, 21% is used for target shooting and 36% for hunting. The paper will comprehensively cover the arguments for and against gun control in America.
Growing boundaries on private citizen ownership of firearms are unsettled, especially in the U.S. There are numerous legislations on firearm boundaries, the public is alarmed to the increase of guns and terrorist attacks in churches, schools and government facilities this endanger member of the public security. Over the past time span many have observed an unparalleled of escalation in fatalities caused by fire arms in the United States. Consequently, expanding the limits on fire arm possessions may decrease the high status of gun-related violence and death cases in the United States.
Due to the violence and subsequent deaths in the United States business and corporations that promote in firearms are likely to profit from the improved controls. The legislation and government of forbidden trade of fire arms will prohibit the maneuvers of the black markets indicating that corporations will gain from the raise of income that will come from the sale firearms (Blocher, & Miller, 2016).
Furthermore, the raise of limitations will help the examination process before allowing a person to attain a fire arm, guaranteeing the well-being of the citizen of the United States A background check will establish if an individual is mentally capable to purchase and own a fire arm. Demonstrating that they are responsibly to own it and to know when they should use it. Primar ...

Gun Control Argumentative Essay

Thesis statement
The opponents and proponents of gun control laws, for a long time now, have been having differing perceptions on the issue but is evident that restrictive gun control laws have harmed the safety and security of the American people by rendering them armless hence not being able to defend themselves when such times arise. Gun control law goes against the Second Amendment of the United States constitution, and there is a need to reduce their strictness to allow Americans to own guns responsibly as provided by the law.
Introduction
Gun control laws refer to any measures carried out to regulate the possession of firearms in the United States. Some parties propose those laws and others that disagree against the initiation of such laws. Then proponents and opponents of gun control, for a long time now, have been having differing perceptions on the issue, and it has proven that this issue is not ending soon. In the never-ending debate on gun control, proponents claim that the Second Amendment was only meant for militias; that violence related to guns should be reduced; that there have been gun restricting rules from time immemorial; and that a large number of Americans, including those that have licensed arms support the idea of limiting new weapons acquired by people (BBC.com, 2019). On the other hand, the opponents applaud the sentiments of the Second Amendment, claiming that it is the right of the American citizens to bear arms; that American people need guns for their self-defense; and that guns help them prevent crime more than it causes it.
The American Second Amendment
Then American Second Amendment outlines that a well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (White et al., 2018). Dated back to the times of the early settlers from England in America, the right to bear arms was seen as essential in different dimensions. According to this group of individuals, their right to bear weapons was significant in that it helps them consolidate a militia government, become part of the law enforcement processes, protect themselves against an authoritarian system.
In modern systems, however, the agenda behind the right to bear arms is different. In this case, the citizens want to protect themselves when they are faced with danger. The second amendment provides a point of argument for the opponents of the gun control laws with the individuals believing that it is their right to bear arms and protecting themselves. The proponents hold very different perspectives as they believe that holding of firearms by citizens puts them in more danger than safety.

This document summarizes arguments for and against gun control. It discusses how guns have been used for hunting, sports, self-defense, law enforcement and the military. However, guns are also associated with shootings and violence. The document examines statistics on gun ownership and usage for self-defense in the U.S. It also discusses the debate around the second amendment and whether stricter gun control laws could help address issues of gun violence.
This document discusses whether gun control is a public health issue. It begins by outlining the controversial debate around gun control in America. It then explains that gun violence poses a major public health problem in the US, costing $155 billion annually. The document argues that gun control is a public health issue because reducing gun deaths can be approached through preventative public health strategies like surveillance of risks and implementing interventions. It provides examples of how other countries like Australia have implemented gun control policies that were followed by decreases in gun homicides and suicides.
This document summarizes and debates the key issues around gun control policies in the United States. It discusses the major debate around interpreting the Second Amendment and whether more legislation is needed to reduce gun violence or if better enforcement of current laws is sufficient. Both sides of the debate are presented, with arguments that stricter gun control could reduce crimes but may infringe on constitutional rights, and that people rather than guns are usually the root cause of violence. The document does not find clear evidence that gun control laws are effective in lowering violence and suggests they may unfairly punish law-abiding gun owners.

This document discusses the public health approach to addressing firearm violence. It outlines that the public health approach involves defining the problem, identifying risk and protective factors, developing and testing prevention strategies, implementing strategies, and monitoring their effectiveness. The public health model looks at victims, agents (firearm types), and environmental (cultural and risk) factors. The document advocates for a multi-layered global strategy that includes availability of data, reducing access and culture of violence, and international coordination.

Overall life span (LS) was 1671.7±1721.6 days and cumulative 5YS reached 62.4%, 10 years – 50.4%, 20 years – 44.6%. 94 LCP lived more than 5 years without cancer (LS=2958.6±1723.6 days), 22 – more than 10 years (LS=5571±1841.8 days). 67 LCP died because of LC (LS=471.9±344 days). AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).

Recommendation
3. GUN CONTROLAS A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE
The increasing number of gun-related incidents,
including mass shootings in schools, justifies the urge
for taking preventive measures in order to decrease the
number of gun-related injuries and deaths.(10)
8. Injuries And Disability Caused by Firearm
Firearm Injuries in the U.S hospital requires an immediate care in a trauma
centre(12).
The injuries from a firearm can either be intentional gunshots and unintentional
gunshots.(12).
Disabilities that can result from Firearm injury
Amputations to spinal cord injuries. (12).

12. Compare Australian and USA Gun Control Laws
Gun Control Law Australia (1).
The regulation of privately held small arms in Australia is ranked as restrictive,
rather than permissive.(1)
The Australian government united in 1996 to enact law to stop Gun violence
They Experienced a decline in gun violence after law was passed. (1).
13. Compare USA and Australian Gun control Laws
Gun Control Law USA (2).
The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states: “A well-regulated
Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to
keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This law made guns
Permissive compare to Australia were it is Restrictive
Despite the implementation of the 1968 gun control and Brady Handgun
Violence Prevention Act (1993): Requires background checks on most firearm
purchasers, depending on seller and venue, and so many other gun control laws,
it has been difficult to control firearms till date in the U.S this is because of the
Landmark Judgement in 2008. (2).
14. Comparing the Effectiveness of Gun control in
Australia and the USA
Gun deaths in 2016 in the US was High compared to that of Australia. (1), (2).
This proves that firearm regulation can be very effective when enforced
properly.
The U.S can also take a cue from Australia, UK where gun control Laws has
proven to be very effective.
15. RECOMMENDATION (11)
Sensible gun laws .
Establish a culture of gun safety
Recognising gun control as a public health problem .
Trauma, connection, and services
More support for gun control research.
16. RECOMMENDATION CONT’ (11)
Economic development
Application of Evidenced-based gun laws
Tackling Law enforcement violence
Background checks before gun purchases are made.

GUN CONTROL AS A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE :
The increasing number firearm related incidents have lead to gun control being treated as a public health issue.(10).
These measures entail the contribution of many disciplines within health care, including physicians, medical organizations, and immediate action from social and political parties. Hence there is a need for Gun control to be treated as a Public Health Problem in other to effectively curb this problem. (10).
Furthermore, with the number of deaths related to firearm violence, it ‘s time to have a act to avoid the deir consequences.
Global Burden/ Statistics of Gun violence 2016
FIREARM-RELATED DEATHS (ALL AGES), BOTH SEXES, 2016 (4).

Colombia: 13,300
Venezuela: 12,800
Philippines: 8,020
Guatemala: 5,090
Russia: 4,380
Afghanistan: 4,050.
Globally it was estimated that 251,000 people died from firearm injuries in 2016 (Brazil, United States Colombia, Venezuela and Guatemala) they accounted for 50.5% of deaths of those deaths. Globally, the majority of firearm injury deaths in 2016 were homicides 64.0% absolute value, 161 000 deaths similarly, 27% were as a result of firearm suicide deaths 67 500 and lastly 9% were unintentional firearm deaths 23 000. From 1990 to 2016, there was no significant decrease in the estimated global age-standardized firearm homicide rate (−0.2% [95% UI, −0.8% to 0.2%]) (4).
Mortality Rates For Firearm and Motor Vehicle Between 1950-2010
The mortality rate for gun violence has remained unchanged just from the chart above just before the turn of the twenty-first century (6)
Relatively low rates was during the 1950’s and early 1960’s it was ( average of 7.3/100,000 population during 1951-1963. It was further followed by a rapid increase in the 1970’s,In the 1990’s it went very up with more than the figures from previous years, however, there was a rapid decline from 1994-1999.
Rates remained unchanged thereafter and above
the 1950s–1960s baseline (average 9.9/100,000 population during 1999–2012).However for the motor vehicle traffic events experienced a decline by 59% from 1969 to 2012. (6)

Economic Cost of Gun Violence
Gun violence cost the U.S. $174 billion in 2010 or an average of $645 per gun in America: (5)
The community cost per firearm assault injury — including work loss, medical/mental health
care, emergency transportation, police/criminal justice activities, insurance claims processing,
employer costs and decreased quality of life — was $6 million for each fatality and $583,000 for each hospital-admitted patient
Injuries And Disability Caused by Firearm
FIREARM INJURIES
The intentional one’s account for a great tendency (>50%) to involve the region of the head and neck, often being fatal. (12)
On the contrary, unintentional gunshots are usually (>70%) in the extremities, where prompt treatment is potentially lifesaving
The length of hospitalization of firearm injury is 3 days for trauma patients with just 4 gun shots wounds and 8 days for a patient with 5 gunshot wounds. (12 )
Disabilities that can result from Firearm injury
Disabilities can result from firearm injuries and this disability can range from amputations to spinal cord injuries, resulting in an impaired quality of life and independence, which subsequently lead to increased cost to society. (12)
Lack of Funding for Gun Violence Research Compared To Other Leading Causes Of Death between 2014-2015 in the US
Funding represents the total funding awarded over the years 2004 to 2015 in the US. (9)
More than 30,000 people are killed with guns in the U.S. every year. That's more than die of AIDS, and about the same number as die in car crashes or from liver disease. But unlike AIDS or car crashes, the government doesn't treat gun injuries or deaths as a public health threat.
The government spends only about $22 million a year on funding for gun violence related research — a tiny fraction of what it spends on other major health threats.
The lawmakers at the senate back in 1997,Added a provision in bill that provide funds for the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention barring the agency from conducting or engaging in activities that would "advocate or promote gun control." At the same time, CDC’s budget was cut by the exact amount it had been spending in gun violence research up until then, hence this made it impossible for any research to be carried on gun violence by the Centre for disease control. (9)
STATES WITH STRONGER FIREARM LAWS HAD LOWER RATES OF FIREARM HOMICIDES
A cross-sectional analysis of deaths from 2010 through 2014 of states with strong firearm laws, it was observed that states with stronger gun laws had lower rates gun-related homicide and suicide than states with less gun control regulations., furthermore it was reported that counties who shared the same boarder or was surrounded by states with stronger guns laws had lower rates too.(12)
It’s evident that gun control regulation is effective in states and other states with little or no laws can learn from this as it has been proven effective. (12)
Organisation Against Gun control Laws in the U.S
The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) 8.
is an American non-profit organization that advocates for gun rights and it has been lobbying for and against firearms legislation since 1975
active members with presidents and congress men being members of same organisation, with very NRA being a Pro gun organisation having more than 5 million lobbying of politicians to avoid promoting gun control bills, hence this has made it more difficult to for law makers to make laws favouring gun control. (8).
Organisation for Gun Control Laws (3).
Brady Campaign (3).
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence The Brady Campaign works to pass and enforce federal and state gun laws, regulations, and public policies through grassroots activism, electing public officials who support gun control legislation, and increasing public awareness of gun violence.
Background checks blocked 192,043 prohibited persons from gaining access to guns, including 82,000 felons or roughly 225 felons every day this was in 2012 alone as result of Brady Campaign to prevent gun violence
Statistics reported by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence confirm that background checks work and have had a significant positive impact on national crime rates (3).
Compare Australian and USA Gun Control Laws
Guiding gun control legislation in Australia includes the National Firearms Agreement (NFA) of 1996 and 2017, the National Firearms Trafficking Policy Agreement (NFTPA) 2002, (1).
The Australian governments united to remove semi-automatic and pump-action shot guns and refiles in the custody of civilians after the 1996 gun violence massacre in Tasmania in which 35 people died.
Australia has since then enjoyed a decade of free of fatal mass shootings, and huge declines in firearm deaths, particularly suicides. Total homicide rates followed the same pattern this was made possible when the gun control law that removed large numbers of rapid-firing firearms from civilians. It seems this may be an effective way of reducing mass shootings, firearm homicides and suicide. (1).
Compare US and Australian Gun control Laws
Despite the several firearm laws that have been passed till date, gun violence is still a big problem in the U.S and this was further made difficult by the court decision affirmed individual right to own a gun for personal use in the landmark District of Columbia v. Heller decision in 2008, which overturned a handgun ban in the Federal District of Columbia.(2)
The National Refile Association (NRA) being a Pro gun organisation having more than 5 million active members with presidents and congress men being members of same organisation, with very strong lobbying of politicians to avoid promoting gun control bills, hence this has made it more difficult. (2)
Comparing the Effectiveness of Gun control in Australia and the USA:
In 2016, there were more than 14,415 gun-related deaths alone in the U.S which was relatively high compared to Australia that had just 238 deaths in 2013 (1), (2)
Recommendation (11).
1.Making laws that will further reduce easy access to dangerous weapons.
2.Establishing a culture of gun safety will go a long way to help
Reduce firearm access to youth and individuals who are at risk of harming themselves or others.
Hold the gun industry accountable and ensure there is adequate oversight over the marketing and sales of guns and ammunition.
Insist on mandatory training and licensing for owners.
Require safe and secure gun storage.
3.Recognize gun violence as a critical and preventable public health problem e.g. by allowing Doctors to discuss about gun control with their patients.
4. Expand access to, culturally competent, coordinated, high quality, social, emotional, and mental health supports and address the impact of trauma, community mental health should be provided to ensure mental health support and trauma support to individuals or victims of gun violence.
5. Support gun violence research: Ensure that the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and others have the resources needed to study this issue and provide evidenced-based guidance.
6. Mental health and wellbeing: Invest in communities to promote resilience and mental health and wellbeing. (11).
Recommendation (11).
Economic development: Creating more job opportunities for youths, it's noted that when an individual is gainfully employed, they won’t think about violence. Investment in employment opportunities will go a long way to create jobs for the youths and in turn reduce gun violence
Application of gun law principles: The new firearm laws need to be evidenced based with reference to states in the United states and countries where gun control has been proven to be effective will go along way to reduce firearm violence. An example of this is Red Flag regulation: It is a strategy if put in place will help reduce gun violence, this regulation allows law enforcement or persons family who sees someone using a gun who might pose a danger to them self or someone else this regulation allows their guns to be seized from them for some amount of them. This will ensure that people are careful with their guns.
Law enforcement violence or Police brutality :Establish accountability for sworn officers of the law and private security: Laws should be put in place where by police officers are held accountable for their actions.
Background checks before any gun purchases is done have been proven by a lot of studies to reduce gun violence. Allowing the law enforcement agency to do background checks will ensure that thorough investigation is done furthermore, increasing the waiting time from 3 days which was known before to a longer time as practiced in other countries where firearm regulations has worked effectively will go a long way to help., hence ensuring effective background checks is necessary. 11.
