The History of TRiO Programs
In 1965, our nation made a commitment to
providing educational opportunity for
all Americans regardless of race, ethnic
background, or economic circumstances in life.
In support of this commitment, Congress
established a series of programs to help
Americans who may have challenging
social backgrounds to:
 enter college
 graduate
 move on to participate more fully in America’s Civic,
economic and social life.
44
Initially There Were 3 Programs
(hence the name TRiO):
Talent Search
Upward Bound
Student Support
Services
 Serving students as early as the 6th
grade, providing early intervention and
college awareness.
 Serving 9th – 12th grade students and
designed to increase the rate at which
participants complete their high school
education, enroll in and graduate from
college.
 Serving current college students by
helping them to remain in college until
students complete their Bachelors
degree.
