This chapter defines personal learning environments (PLEs) and open networked learning environments (ONLEs) and explores their interrelationship. A PLE is a collection of personalized web 2.0 tools that help learners manage formal and informal learning. An ONLE empowers learners to participate in creative endeavors and conduct social networking using web 2.0 tools in a transparent, open environment not restricted by institutional rules. PLEs and ONLEs work together, with PLEs linking tools to support ONLEs. The chapter then provides guidance on setting up a PLE in three phases: gathering resources, using web 2.0 tools for collaboration, and self-reflection. It concludes by introducing connectivism
