Medical lab scientists the ‘hidden profession’ that saves livesPauleenCinco
Medical lab scientists play a crucial but often unseen role in healthcare. As detectives of the medical field, they analyze biological samples to detect diseases and provide insights that guide doctors' treatment decisions. Their work identifying positive COVID-19 cases helped doctors begin early treatment and reduce spread. While advances in technology have improved turnaround for test results, the important role medical lab scientists play remains underappreciated by the public who rarely see them. Their efforts in testing samples and analyzing results are key to patient care and outcomes.
Improving patient safety and healthcare quality in the 21st century·competenc...JhynesRenomeron

1. They created a patient registry with 237 registrants from 198 families, 149 of which have JNCL, to facilitate research studies.
2. They developed the Unified Batten Disease Rating Scale to measure disease progression and validated its use in clinical trials. Over 300 exams have been completed on 120 children to establish natural history studies.
3. They validated a non-invasive buccal epithelial cell collection method for genetic testing, obtaining genetic confirmation for all 120 patients in the registry.
Student Perceptions of the Clinical Laboratory Science ProfessionJohnKennethAlido
This study examined the attitudes and perceptions of college biology and clinical laboratory science (CLS/CLT) students towards the clinical laboratory science profession. Focus group discussions with these students in Texas universities found that while they view the profession as interesting, many do not intend to remain in it long-term due to perceptions of limited career advancement opportunities. Most students rely on financial support to complete their education and would welcome incentives like scholarships or loan forgiveness. Students also feel more promotion of the field is needed on college campuses to increase its visibility.

This document discusses digital pathology and its potential to address challenges facing anatomic pathology in Canada. It summarizes the current process which involves biopsy samples being prepared as slides that pathologists physically examine under microscopes. It notes pathology is essential for healthcare but faces issues like unequal rural access, inefficient manual processes, and increasing workload. Digital pathology could help by allowing virtual slide sharing to improve access, and using image analysis to increase efficiency and allow pathologists to handle higher caseloads. This represents a new frontier with the potential to enhance pathology services in Canada.

Integrating nutrition into national HIV policies and programs: experience fro...RENEWAL-IFPRI
This document discusses integrating nutrition into national HIV policies and programs based on experience from Africa. It summarizes the scientific evidence showing that nutritional supplementation can improve energy and protein intake as well as body weight and composition in HIV-positive individuals. However, more research is still needed to determine the impact on clinical outcomes like CD4 count and mortality. It also describes challenges faced and lessons learned from programmatic experiences integrating nutrition services into HIV care in several African countries. Key research gaps are identified around determining the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different food products and better harmonizing food security and nutrition programs for HIV-positive populations.

1) This clinical practice guideline from the AAP provides recommendations for diagnosing and managing UTIs in febrile infants aged 2-24 months.
2) If a clinician decides a febrile infant requires immediate antibiotics, they must first obtain a urine specimen through catheterization or SPA for culture and analysis, as bags are unreliable.
3) Ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder should be done to identify abnormalities, but routine VCUG after first UTI is not recommended except for complex cases. Data do not support prophylaxis for preventing recurrent UTI in infants without high-grade VUR.
The document discusses updated recommendations for preventing surgical site infections, including adhering to guidelines for maintaining asepsis in the operating room, having patients use chlorhexidine for preoperative skin cleansing, and maintaining normothermia during and after surgery. Key factors that can reduce SSIs are proper skin preparation techniques, use of antibiotic prophylaxis, and keeping patients warm to avoid hypothermia which compromises the immune system's ability to fight infection.

How evidence affects clinical practice in egyptWafaa Benjamin
Evidence based medicine is the gold standard for clinical care.
It implies the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values.
There is still a wide gap between availability of evidence and its incorporation into routine practice in our country.
Barriers to implementation could be personal, social, institutional, financial and legal barriers.
True practice of evidence based care can only occur where evidence based decisions coincide with patients’ beliefs and clinicians’ preferences.
Continuing medical education programs should be set with integrating evidence based medicine teaching and learning within clinical training.
The importance of presence of local national guidelines which need to take into account variation in expertise, resources and patient preferences across our geographical and cultural contexts .
Customisation of a guideline to meet the local needs of a target patient population is critical to successful implementation.
