The document provides an events calendar for the 2015-16 season at the Conservatory of Music. It lists various performances by the Conservatory Orchestra including Classical Kick-off Weekend in September exploring works by Mozart and his contemporaries. The calendar also details the chamber music series, opera productions including Carmen and Don Giovanni, faculty artist recitals, master classes from guest artists, a historical performance series, and more.

The Conservatory Orchestra presents a season of works specially chosen
to challenge, enlighten and inspire. Mozart and two of his neglected but
influential contemporaries receive pride of place during September’s Classical
Kick-off Weekend (p. 18). And the orchestra explores sources of inspiration
for Strauss and Berio in this spring’s Transformations series (p. 11).

usicians prize a solid technique. But the San Francisco
Conservatory of Music teaches other skills that are just as essential:
how to inquire, how to evaluate, how to discern. An SFCM education
enables students to develop a unique understanding of the world,
one which they learn to express in a clear, strong voice as artists.
A rich assortment of student performances – in orchestra, opera, chamber
music and historical performance – anchors SFCM’s concert season. In
this brochure, you’ll also find recitals by our lauded performance faculty
and internationally regarded guest artists. Master classes, festivals,
competitions and special events celebrate virtuosity and illuminate the
historical, economic and personal forces that drive musical creativity.
For a season overview, see At A Glance (pp. 12-15). Concert details
appear on the performance series pages. Be sure to browse Department
Recitals (pp. 16-17) for the full range of free concerts at SFCM. Our
season holds discoveries for audiences and artists alike. We look
forward to welcoming you!

Bowing together, breathing together, thinking together… What transforms
a handful of soloists into a seamless string ensemble? SFCM explores this
exhilarating alchemy by inviting members of world-famous quartets to mentor
students side-by-side in master classes and as partners in performance.
For drama and spectacle, it’s hard to top Carmen and Don Giovanni. But the
most compelling thing about opera at SFCM is watching young singers meet
the unique demands of the art form. Under new Director of Opera Jose Maria
Condemi and other seasoned professionals, students explore an exciting range
of repertoire as they learn to command the stage.

Think of it as a musical riff on archaeology. Historical performance examines
manuscripts, ancient instruments and even artifacts like wax cylinders to reveal
a new experience of music. The Baroque Ensemble headlines a series that
includes opera, chamber music, orchestral works and appearances by top
early music artists including SFCM’s own faculty.

Besides chops, it takes knowledge and savvy to reach the world’s major stages.
SFCM’s Master Class series invites renowned performers and conductors to
share insights with Conservatory students about technique, style and the
business – sprinkled with backstage tales – all before a live audience.
Composers have long appreciated the virtues of recycling. This fascinating
series explores those who have transformed existing music into something
new through arrangements or transcriptions, whether to pay homage to a
predecessor, to push boundaries ... or just to meet a deadline.
