Transforming ReStore Unutilized Donations
into Repurposed Fundraising Arts & Crafts
Mark Miller: Board Chair
 The use of something for a purpose other than
its original intended used. Repurposing an item
can be done by modifying it to fit a new use, or
by using the item as is in a new way.
 Repurposing is essentially a form of recycling.
Instead of throwing an item away, an individual
or business finds a new use for it. This can be a
cost-effective strategy, since items that can be
used instead of discarded prevent a
household/business from having to purchase
new, possibly expensive items.
 A ReStore is a discount department store, run by
Habitat for Humanity. Funds from the sale of
donated items are used to change lives, “One Home
At a Time“.
 The ReStore accepts donations of new and used
building materials, furniture, and other items. Then
sells them to the public at discounted prices.
 All the profits go to the Habitat Affiliate to build
homes for families in need.
 There are over 850 ReStores across North America.
Habitat provides a great way to keep reusable
materials out of the waste streams and landfills, while
providing funding for Habitat’s work.
 Our Vision:
 Where every person has access to decent houses in decent
communities, can experience God’s love, and is able to grow
into all that God intends.
 Our Mission:
 Using the resources God has given us to eliminate poverty
housing in Northwest Wisconsin and beyond.
 About WRHfH:
 WRHfH is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization
operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love
into action by building homes, communities and hope.
WRHfH is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing
locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating
and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just
housing policies; and by providing training and access to
resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.
…instead of spending funds to send them to a landfill?
 What is needed?
◦ The creative energy of resourceful volunteers.

 Lumber with defects, twisted or warped
 Display models
 Discontinued items
…in order to build more homes.
 Is this a viable project?
 Who is interested in participating?
 Where could we have a workshop?
 Tools?
 Storage?
 Resale possibilities?
 Can trash be transformed into treasure?
◦ Is this a workable fundraiser for Wild Rivers Habitat
for Humanity?
 We could connect with past & present Wild
Rivers Habitat for Humanity volunteers.
 Seek new community involvement.
◦ Senior centers
◦ 4H groups
◦ Boy Scouts
◦ High Schools, Community Education Class
◦ Submit an article about the project in the local
papers and include contact information for
interested volunteers.
Are there other location possibilities?
 Similar to what Public Television or Public
Radio does, such as:
◦ If you donate $50, you get a repurposed birdhouse
◦ If you donate $500, you get a repurposed garden
shed
◦ If you donate $5,000, you get a repurposed
playhouse
