Theme: Life with the Holy Spirit – knowing, growing, going
Sermon: Be filled with the Holy Spirit
Text: Acts 2:4a (NIV)
‘All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit …’
Introduction
Some encounters in life change us permanently. Such was the experience of Jesus’ disciples on the day when the Holy Spirit came from heaven and filled them.
The promise that all who believe in Jesus will be filled with God’s Spirit, is still valid and relevant today.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is life changing and life charging!
Let’s focus on how to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Main points
What to expect
When the Holy Spirit comes to fill our lives He does amazing things! His name means Helper, Comforter and Encourager. He is the One who comes to live inside us and stays alongside us in this life.
He makes Jesus real to us (John15:26).
He teaches us and reminds us of God’s Word (John 14:26).
He transforms us to look more and more like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18).
He pours God’s love into us (Romans 5:5).
He produces His fruit in us and manifests God’s character in us (Galatians 5:22-23).
He gives us power to be witnesses (Acts 1:8).
He releases His gifts in us (1 Corinthians 12).
He glorifies Jesus through us (John 16:14).
The Holy Spirit will fill your life with joyful boldness.
2. A promise for all
On the day of Pentecost (celebrated last Sunday) the promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit was fulfilled. The disciples and other believers (120 people) were waiting together as Jesus had instructed them.
In Acts 2:4 it says, ‘all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues.’ (Emphasis added)
Who were the all?
All those who had put their faith in Jesus.
All who wanted the gift of the Holy Spirit and waited for the promise as instructed by Jesus.
All those who expected and believed that Jesus’ promise will be fulfilled. And they were not disappointed.
Don’t be foxed – know that you are filled.
Some people believe you are filled with the Holy Spirit when you receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and that you don’t need to be filled with the Spirit after that.
Scripture shows something different. From the accounts of early believers (Acts 8:15, 19:1-4) it is clear that we do not receive the fullness of the Spirit when we become believers, but that there is a second experience which brings this about and does not always happen automatically. Paul’s interaction with the disciples at Ephesus (Acts 19:1-7) confirms this.
His question “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” would have been unnecessary if it was something that occurred automatically. Instead He prayed for them specifically to receive the fullness of the Spirit.
Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit?
It brings great change!
3. Radical change in Peter
The change in Peter after being filled with the Holy Spirit is especially remarkable.
His Pentecost story shows a totally transformed life. He went from denying the Lord in an hour of weakness to proclaiming Him boldly before thousands.
A few weeks before the day of Pentecost Peter denied knowing Jesus three times in one night. But when the power and fire of the Holy Spirit filled him, this uneducated, fearful fisherman stood up before thousands of people and preached a message that moved 3 000 men to accept Jesus as their Saviour!
Being filled with the Spirit will bring the same boldness to each of us today.
4. How do we receive the Holy Spirit?
Being filled with the Spirit is an instruction.
In Ephesians 5:18 Paul says, ‘ … be filled with the Spirit …’
Let’s follow His advice in John 7:37-38 to thirst for the Spirit. In Luke 11:8-13 He encourages us to ask for the Spirit.
‘On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”’ − John 7:37-38 (NIV)
‘I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; those who seek find; and to those who knock, the door will be opened. “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”’ − Luke 11:8-13 (NIV)
To receive the Holy Spirit:
Come to Jesus with your thirst.
Ask for the Holy Spirit.
Believe that you will receive.
If you ask and believe, you will receive!
When we read biblical accounts of people being filled with the Holy Spirit, there are definite signs of His infilling in their lives. The prophet Joel speaks about people prophesying, having dreams, and seeing visions, and in the book of Acts we see the disciples speaking in languages they did not learn. Expect to see evidence of His infilling! At the same time I encourage you not to focus on the signs more than the actual infilling and the Person of the Holy Spirit.
Experiences differ – don’t limit the Lord in your expectation.
Many experiences over the years have taught me that some people have a wow-and-now moment while others have a quiet, soulful experience with manifestations only following over time. In the end all who receive Him are changed and empowered.
The best is to be childlike and expect the most. Let’s expect Him to ignite our lives!
Application:
The working of the Holy Spirit was evident in the lives of the early Christians.
They were filled and anointed by the Spirit, led by Him and consequently walked in the Spirit.
No wonder the fire of the Holy Spirit burning through them caused the message of Jesus to spread and change the then known world in record time!
Let’s follow in their footsteps.
Are you thirsty for the Spirit? Come to Him and drink, whether you have never been filled before or been filled some time ago. The disciples were also filled again after the day of Pentecost as they faced persecution (Acts 4). Maybe you were filled before but need His power for the challenges and opportunities you face today. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh with His power.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for the promise of Your Holy Spirit. I ask that You fill me today. I believe, and I receive! Amen.
