4. Dear Delegates of the 2015 JCI
World Congress,
Warm greetings to you all! Welcome to Kanazawa,
Japan! (金沢日本へようこそ - Kanazawa Nihon e
yōkoso)
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the biggest
event of the year for what will surely be an exciting
time to celebrate JCI’s 100 years of impact!
The year 2015 has been a fantastic year where
members successfully demonstrated their dedication
for taking targeted action to spread impact to both
new and existing communities. This year, as we
celebrate the centennial of our organization, we
are adding our sustainable impact, efforts and
connections to the JCI legacy. I am profoundly
grateful to each one of you for your commitment to
action and positive change.
Throughout my travels this past year, I have
witnessed your commitment to empower young
people by initiating projects that are very relevant to
your local community needs. Engaging young people
with the purpose of bettering the world is a great
example of how we care for both the future of JCI
and our world.
During this JCI World Congress, I hope that each
one of you will take this opportunity to strengthen
and enhance that commitment, connection and
care. There will be plenty of activities to engage in
to share, learn and grow together. Moreover, there
will be celebrations throughout the entire week; I
am sure that you will all enjoy the festivities as we
look back on the astounding history of what JCI has
accomplished in the last 100 years and also dream of
what we can create in the next century and beyond.
This is a new era and bright beginning for our future.
I thank you all for joining us during this joyous
celebration of impact and for being leading examples.
I hope you will smile all week as we commit, connect
and care!
Feel the impact of JCI, feel the impact of your actions
and feel the impact of Kanazawa. Enjoy the rich
culture, history and experiences that Japan has to
offer.

Dear 2015 JCI World Congress Delegates and Honored Guests,
Welcome to Kanazawa, Japan!
It is with great thankfulness that I look back on this year. We had grand dreams of what 2015 would bring, and it
has not disappointed. JCI members, alumni, partners and friends have spent the year demonstrating the power
of young people when they are committed to partnership and positive change. It cannot be denied that JCI’s
impact has been felt around the globe the last 100 years.
Now we have the great opportunity at the end of this unprecedented year to celebrate together the incredible
impact that has been created not only this year but also over the past century. The JCI 100th Anniversary has
given us the chance to share with the world what JCI members have done and are continuing to do to create
impact in their communities. We have seen thousands upon thousands of lives impacted by JCI Project Impact
100 reminding us that JCI must continue to be a beacon of hope and inspiration to the world and that positive
change and forward movement is possible.
I encourage you to enjoy this celebration here in Kanazawa with thousands of other young active citizens with
similar passions. And while I hope that you will all enjoy yourselves throughout the celebrations, we must not
lose this opportunity to plan and become inspired for how JCI will move forward into the next century of impact.

柴田 剛介
I would like to express my deep appreciation to each and every one of the JCI Officers, very capably led by 2015
JCI President Ismail Haznedar, for all of their support for the 2015 JCI World Congress in Kanazawa, being held
during this memorable year in which we celebrate the 100th
Anniversary of the JCI Movement.
At the same time, as the National President of the hosting National Organization, I would also like to extend a
very warm welcome to the National Presidents and members of JCI from around the world who are taking part in
this World Congress, being held here in Japan.
Japan is the world’s oldest contiguous nation, with a history dating back 2,675 years. The people of Japan
possess an exquisite sensitivity and cherish the traditional cultures of each region which have been passed
down over decades, centuries and millennia. In their hearts, the people of Japan respect, honor and support one
another and it is this spirit of mutual respect that has given rise to Japan’s traditional culture.
I hope that while they are in Kanazawa for the 2015 JCI World Congress, the delegates will be able to directly
experience the physical and spiritual aspects of Japanese culture that have been nurtured with great care and
which find their full expression in the traditional, yet modern culture of Kanazawa.
I would like to close by conveying my heartfelt wish that this event will be a rich and successful experience for
everyone, and provide an opportunity for delegates from all over the world to make new discoveries and develop
strong friendships in this city of Kanazawa.

7. Fellow members of JCI from around the world,
Welcome to the 2015 JCI World Congress in Kanazawa!
On behalf of JCI Kanazawa, I would like to extend to you
my heartfelt appreciation and welcome.
It is a great pleasure for the members of JCI Kanazawa to
be able to hold such a memorable World Congress here in
Kanazawa during the 100th
Anniversary of the JCI movement.
During the Edo period, our city of Kanazawa was a castle
town of the Kaga Domain and was one of the five major
cities of Japan. It ranked fifth in size after Edo (present-
day Tokyo); Kyo (present-day Kyoto); Osaka and Nagoya.
Throughout its 430-year history, Kanazawa was very
fortunate to escape the ravages of war and in that time it
was able to create its own unique and peaceful cultural
traditions. The people of Kanazawa have made it their
mission to transmit this cultural heritage to posterity.
Kanazawa is a “peaceful town” and seeks to realize
its strong aspirations for global peace and prosperity
through the sister relations it has established with
different cities throughout the world, and through its
cultural exchange activities.
Kanazawa has developed into the “Peaceful Town of
Kanazawa” by constantly reflecting on the ways that
culture and civilization coexists with one another. We
hope that the many members of JCI from around the
world visiting Kanazawa will all have the chance to
experience firsthand, the virtue and aesthetics of our
city. This is the core message we wish to share with you
during this congress, “Feel the Impact of Kanazawa!”
We will be especially gratified if you can come to feel in
your heart, the “Japaneseness” that we have inherited
from the distant past, and sense the greatness of our
culture, which has changed and adapted with the
passage of time.
In closing, I hope that this congress will serve as a
springboard for the JCI Movement and a valuable
platform for JCI members from different parts of the
world to develop friendships with each other.
We are committed to welcoming you with heartfelt
sincerity, during the JCI World Congress in Kanazawa.

8. Congratulations on the opening of the 2015 JCI
World Congress in Kanazawa!
Allow me to warmly welcome each and every one of you coming to
Ishikawa Prefecture from various destinations around the world.
This year marks the 100th
Anniversary of the JCI Movement, and
it has been a memorable year for Ishikawa Prefecture, especially
with the inauguration of the Hokuriku Shinkansen high-speed
rail line, which was the realization of a long cherished dream of
ours, as residents of Ishikawa Prefecture. It gives us the greatest
pleasure that the JCI World Congress is being held in Ishikawa
during such a memorable year.
Today, even more than ever, we are enjoying many opportunities
for international exchange, in such a wide variety of fields as the
economy, culture, sports and education; positive interactions are
becoming more and more important, not only at the national level,
but at the local level as well. In these circumstances, Ishikawa
Prefecture is now bustling with visitors both from at home and
abroad, thanks to the ease of access provided by the newly
inaugurated Hokuriku Shinkansen line. Another attraction that
draws visitors to Ishikawa Prefecture is the traditional culture
of the Kaga Domain, cultivated since the Edo Period and still
alive and strong here. A variety of refined cultural treasures may
be found in Ishikawa Prefecture and it is recognized as one of
Japan’s most important cultural areas.
It is of great significance that we are able to hold this event in
the land of Ishikawa, which is now attracting the attention of
people both in Japan and overseas, and to be able to invite,
from around the world, many members of JCI who will be taking
on active roles in society in the future. This event will offer them
many opportunities to deepen their mutual understanding through
meaningful interaction with one another. I sincerely hope that
you will expand the wave of exchange, filled with your youthful
passion and foster deeper international dialogue.
I also wish to encourage you to make the very most of this
valuable chance to enjoy all that our prefecture has to offer,
in so many ways: with the rich historical and cultural heritage
of the Kaga Domain, including Kanazawa Castle Park and the
Kenrokuen Garden, which has obtained the top, three star, rating
from the Michelin Green Guide; such rich natural beauty as Mt.
Haku and Noto’s Satoyama and Satomi, areas designated as
Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems; famous hot
spring areas and fresh food from the seas and mountains.
I would like to close by extending my deepest appreciation for the
support of all of those involved in the JCI World Congress here
in Kanazawa and with my hope for your continued good health,
success and for a great Congress!

Welcome to Kanazawa!
It gives me the greatest pleasure that the 2015
JCI World Congress is being held here in Kanazawa during the
100th
anniversary of the JCI Movement. It is an honor for the people
of Kanazawa and me to have this opportunity to welcome to our
city so many members of JCI from both at home and abroad.
Kanazawa is blessed with pure water and verdant natural beauty.
During the Edo period, Kanazawa prospered as a castle town
and remains steeped in the historical atmosphere of the times. If
you wander the streets of downtown Kanazawa you can hear the
sounds of the canals and streams of the Saigawa and Asanogawa
rivers, and experience the colors of the four seasons, such as
cherry blossoms in spring; deep greenery in summer; bright foliage
in autumn and scenery of moist snowfall in winter.
Around 430 years ago, the ruler of this area at that time was
the lord of the Maeda Clan of the Kaga Domain. He focused his
energies on learning and culture and was fortunate to be able
to avoid having to go to war. He encouraged such crafts as
lacquerware, metal work, pottery and dyes, and the performing
arts, such as the tea ceremony, Noh and Japanese music. Crafts
and performing arts in Kanazawa are connected to the culture of
the area which has been passed down and made a living part of
the people of Kanazawa. This has led to a deep appreciation for
beauty and outstanding craftsmanship. Kanazawa, as a city with
a rich history, has consistently strived to move forward with the
times, while protecting its cultural heritage and traditions. For this
reason, in 2009, it was designated as a UNESCO Creative City of
Crafts and Folk Art.
We citizens of Kanazawa are also proud of our cuisine, which is an
authentic mixture of rich food from the mountains and the seas.
Important parts of our cuisine are the dishes upon which the food
is served, as well as the consideration and manners that are an
important part of the way in which it is served. Another aspect of
Kanazawa cuisine is the traditional Japanese architecture of the
places in which the food is served, such as Machiya, traditional
townhouses. I hope that you have the chance to experience our
delicious cuisine in such historical settings while you are in Kanazawa.
Thanks to the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in March this
year, Kanazawa is now only two and a half hours from three major
cities in Japan and bustling with visitors. I hope this JCI World
Congress will give you a sense of how attractive and deep our
cultures and traditions are, and that you are able to expand your
circle of friendship with people from various countries and areas
around the world, as well as Kanazawa and the rest of Japan, while
you are here in our city. I also hope that your visit to Kanazawa
leaves you with a lasting impression of our vision of Kanazawa as
the realization of “Kanazawa: City of Global Interaction Base.”
Allow me to conclude by wishing all of you gathered here at a great
JCI World Congress lasting success and prosperity in your lives.

10. GREETINGS
10 CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF IMPACT
It is a great honor to be able to offer this message of greetings to
the 2015 JCI World Congress Kanazawa delegates. I would like
to extend my warmest welcome to each and every one of you.
I truly appreciate the fact that we have been given this wonderful
opportunity to host the 2015 JCI World Congress and that we
are able to hold such a memorable congress here in Kanazawa
on the 100th
Anniversary of the JCI Movement. Thanks to your
support and cooperation for our bid for the congress, as well
as during the time we were promoting and preparing for the
congress, the members of the Congress Organizing Committee
and I have been able to launch this event today.
I am truly honored that we have this chance to host such a
grand congress; it is more than we deserve. I also appreciate
the opportunity it has given us to face the challenges associated
with hosting this event. The members of the COC and I wish to
assure our fellow members from around the world that the JCI
World Congress will be a productive experience and positively
impact the realization of world peace, based on the congress
theme, Feel the Impact of Kanazawa.
Kanazawa and its surroundings are appealing in a variety of
ways: rich natural beauty, historically protected by the Japan
Sea and Mount Haku; our people, with their strong sense of
hospitality; the wide variety of Japanese cuisine, including
confectionary; our streetscapes, with their unique Japanese
flavor; our Japanese culture, which has been beautifully
preserved, deeply rooted in the lives of our citizens and finding
expression in such activities as the tea ceremony, performing
arts and the traditional handiwork and craftsmanship, handed
down from the past.
It will give me great pleasure if, while taking part in the functions
and seminars and enjoying your stay in Kanazawa, you can
use this opportunity to the best advantage, deepening your
friendships with other members of JCI from around the world.
I would like to close by once more thanking all those who
have supported us since we first submitted our bid to host the
2015 JCI World Congress here in Kanazawa, right through the
preparation stages and final successful opening of the World
Congress. These include, but are not limited to: JCI and the
World Headquarters staff; the members of the JCI Senate; JCI
Japan and its headquarters staff; the JCI Kanazawa Senior
Club members: and the members of the Congress Organizing
Committee. Most of all, I would like to express my appreciation
to all of those who are attending the JCI World Congress. I hope
that for all of you, your participation is rewarded by many great
experiences during this World Congress.

The Mission Inn Restaurant, St. Louis, USA
Henry Giessenbier, Jr. and some of his
associates, 1914.
The Beginning of a Movement
The JCI Movement began in 1915 by one
man, with one vision and a passion for positive
change. Henry Giessenbier Jr. lived during a
time of growth and expansion and saw the
need for youth to develop their skills as leaders
in order to address the civic challenges of their
time. This vision included igniting a movement
that worked toward the establishment of a
permanent and everlasting world peace. The
first JCI Local Organization was founded on
October 13, 1915 at the Mission Inn in St.
Louis, USA, when 32 men joined together to
form the Young Men’s Progressive Association
(YMPCA). The YMPCA sought to offer young
active citizens the unique opportunity to
share their voice and engage with community
members and officials to address community
challenges and create sustainable impact. In
nearly five months, the organization grew from
32 to 750 members. Official recognition of the
organization was granted on November 30,
1915, when it was enrolled as a member of the
Mayor’s Conference of Civic Organizations. In
1916, the YMPCA became known as the Junior
Citizens and soon after it changed again to the
Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Junior Chamber Spreads
Across the Nation
The 1920’s brought great change for the JCI
Movement as it went from a local to national
status. The first convention of the US Junior
Chamber occurred in St. Louis, USA in 1920
with 30 cities present; during this convention,
the first constitution was adopted. Also,
projects were now developed both locally and
nationally to expand the impact. In 1926, the
US Junior Chamber pursued the expansion
of aviation in the United States by working
toward establishing airports throughout the
country with member Charles A. Lindbergh,
who helped introduce the age of commercial
aviation. JCI grassroots initiatives continued
with the Get-Out-The-Vote campaign in 1926
in which the US Junior Chamber became
the first national organization to conduct a
systematic campaign to educate active citizens
of their civil duty to vote. As a result, 12 million
more individuals voted in the 1928 election
than in 1924. Other projects, including several
successful campaigns aimed at increasing road
safety, showed the impact of the JCI Movement
growing in more and more communities across
the United States.
Expanding Internationally
Months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the
US Junior Chamber of Commerce became
the first young men’s group to back the
draft principal and during that time 85% of
the organization’s membership entered into
the military. In the midst of World War II and
organizational expansion, the time came for the
US Junior Chamber to take the organization to
an international standing. It was on December
11, 1944 with representatives from the United
States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama
present that Giessenbier’s 24-year-old
association was established internationally
during the Inter-American Congress in
Mexico City. With their international presence
established, the first JCI Congress took place
in Panama City, Panama in 1946. It was the
work of the US Junior Chamber that influenced
World War II Veteren Artemio L. Vergel de Dios
from Manila, Philippines to reach out to the
US Chamber and initiate the first JCI Local
Organization in Asia in 1948. The organization’s
rapid international growth demonstrated the
desire to build peaceful relationships across
borders.
Collaboration for a Better World
The 1950’s were a time of change but also
most importantly a time of reconnecting to
the roots and values of the organization. In
1954, the United Nations Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC) granted JCI Special
Consultative status, officially defining the
supportive relationship between JCI and
the UN. With the understanding that the
brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty
of nations, a core value of the organization,
JCI was the first international organization in
the post-war world to recognize Japan as its
own country. Moreover, American soldiers and
JCI members who remained in Japan after the
war helped rebuild the country and introduce
democracy. Further exemplifying the value of
brotherhood, the first international campaign
launched in 1954. Operation Brotherhood
was developed to support refugees fleeing
communism in Vietnam. The campaign included
large-scale fundraising efforts that raised US $1
million, assisted more than 730,000 individuals
through health and wellness programs and
created 350 special villages for refugees.

Breaking Social Barriers Globally
As more countries gained their independence,
JCI rapidly expanded in Africa and Latin
America. While citizens gained new freedoms,
opportunities for women were increasing.
Throughout the 1970’s, membership growth
among women soared and in 1971 the first
female National President was elected in
Nepal. JCI continued this trend of breaking
social barriers in 1974 by establishing the first
multiracial organization to receive governmental
permission in South Africa. During this time
of expansion and growth, JCI communicated
their stories of impact by issuing a multi-
language publication across the globe to nearly
400,000 members. After several decades
since the organization became international,
JCI demonstrated its ability to develop leaders
as JCI alumni moved on to assume leadership
roles in government, businesses and civil
societies in communities across the world.
Peaceful Solutions for All People
Starting in the 1980’s, organizational themes
focused heavily on equality, internationalism
and world peace in response to civil conflicts,
assassination attempts and acts of terror.
The Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the
World (JCI TOYP) program was launched
internationally in 1983 to recognize socially
responsible young active citizens to inspire the
next generation of young leaders. Through this
program, JCI has recognized people for their
accomplishments in areas such as business,
economic and entrepreneurial accomplishment,
medical innovation and contributions to
children, peace and human rights. Throughout
the 1990’s, JCI members around the world
took action to support marginalized groups
such as children, people with disabilities and
senior citizens. JCI participated in drafting
the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, a
list of 54 articles created by the UN General
Assembly, addressing basic human rights
to which children everywhere are entitled.
To provide equal opportunities, a variety of
projects constructed hospitals, camps for
disabled youth and senior housing facilities.
In the United States, members lobbied for
legislation to mandate public accessibility for
the disabled.
Impact in the New Millennium
The early 2000’s reinvigorated the sense of
active citizenship and grassroots initiatives
throughout the organization; members
refocused projects and efforts around the JCI
Mission. In 2004, JCI committed to advance
the Millennium Development Goals created
by the United Nations. This set of eight global
development goals range from eradicating
extreme hunger and poverty to combating
HIV/AIDS and malaria, all with a target date
of 2015. Today, JCI members continue to
organize projects focused on advancing these
goals by taking action at the local level. In
2008, JCI formalized a partnership with the
UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign,
which focuses JCI members’ actions on
raising global awareness, advocating for
prevention and fundraising to support the fight
against malaria. Due to their collaboration
and commitment, the coordinated efforts of
JCI members around the world has reduced
child malaria deaths by more than half. To
increase the quantity of projects that result in
sustainable solutions, the General Assembly
of the 2010 JCI World Congress adopted the
JCI Active Citizen Framework, a roadmap of
actionable, results-driven steps to produce
sustainable impact. The JCI Active Citizen
Framework has helped drive projects by first
conducting community needs analysis, then
collaborating with stakeholders to formulate
a sustainable solution and take action. This
framework has been the driving force behind
projects around the world, resulting in impact
such as a medical camp in Bangladesh for
expectant mothers lacking prenatal resources,
apprenticeships for unemployed youth in
Europe and voters awareness campaigns
across African nations. By following the steps
of the framework, these sustainable solutions
address difficult community needs.
Celebrating 100 Years of Impact
As JCI celebrates the 100th
Anniversary of the
JCI Movement, the moment has presented
itself for the organization to reflect on the
impact created over the last 100 years. By
sharing the organization’s numerous stories
of the lives touched and the communities that
have changed for the better, this celebration
encourages JCI members to acknowledge
the challenges of today and strive to provide
the solutions of tomorrow. Active citizenship
has been the driving force behind JCI since
the beginning. Active citizens are those
who develop the skills, knowledge and
understanding to be able to make informed
decisions about their communities with the aim
of improving the quality of life. Guided by this
shared passion to contribute to a better future,
JCI’s group of young active citizens encourage
one another to take responsibility and find the
courage to tackle critical challenges of our time
to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future
for our communities and the world by finding
targeted solutions. Through the organization’s
initiatives and philosophy, JCI will continue to
discover and celebrate the unsung heroes of
our time on its journey to be the organization
that unites all sectors of society to create
sustainable impact.
