Withalloursuccesses,ithasalsobeenanunusuallychallengingyear.Whilewe’vemaintainedmembershipoverthepastsixyears, this yearwe experiencedourmostsignificantdecreasesinceformingGirlScoutsofSouthCarolina–MountainstoMidlandsin2007. It’sno consolationthatwe’renotalone: ourdeclinemirrorssimilardropsthroughoutnonprofitandyouth-servingorganizations.Ourdropis oursalonetoown,however,andwedo.We’vechallengedourselvestoreversethisdeclinebyprovidingthehighestqualityleadership developmentand volunteerexperiencesforgirlsandadultsthatnootherorganizationcanoffer. STEMSeries–In2014/2015wewillbelaunchingthreenewSTEMSeriesthankstoaGSUSA/Noyce FoundationgrantthatispilotinghowtoEngineerYourJourneywithTechBridgeactivities. DaisyPower–WepilotedourDaisyPowerinitiativeand,basedontheresults,receivedadditional fundingfrom UnitedWayoftheMidlandstoexpandandcontinuetheinitiative. Thefocusisonhelping K5 and 1stgrade girlswhoarestrugglingreaders,andtheirparents,experienceaninfusionoffunand interestingliteracyskillbuildingintotheirjourneythroughouttheyear. Volunteers Asanorganizationthatis99%volunteer-led,equippingvolunteersforeasysuccessremains ourtop strategicpriority. Wecontinuetomakesystemimprovementssothat whetheritisforaweek,a month,ora year,volunteersareabletomakeameaningful contributionthatisultimatelyadvancingtheGirlScoutMovement. Resultsfroma2014TroopLeaderSurveyindicatetheyreceive meaningfulbenefitsfromtheirGirlScoutvolunteercontributions: 92% Volunteeringisavaluableuseofmytime. 92% IfeellikeIcanmakeadifference. 91% Iunderstandtheuniqueopportunitiesthat Girl Scouting providestotoday’sgirls. 83% Ifeelappreciatedbythegirlsandtheirparents. 81% Ifoundopportunitiesthatmatchedmyinterests. - 7. 2014ANNUAL REPORT 6 StatementfortheYear Ending September2014 - This was the fifth consecutive year that the council has operated in the black with a net surplus to be reinvested in She Sees the Future. - All income from divestment of properties (Camp Star Fort and the Mauldin Service Center) has met or exceeded sales benchmarks identified by the board of directors. - 100% of proceeds from prod- uct sales stay local to support girl, troop, service unit and council program delivery. Income - Two major expenses for 2014: � absorbing Pension Plan costs � hiring Corporate DevelopMint to guide our initial capital campaign focus - Expenses remained flat to prior year Expenses Important Financial Points � For the seventh consecutive year, we received an unqualified audit opinion for FY2013 – the best rating a nonprofit can receive. � This is a preliminary report because the yearend audit is not complete. A final report will be available in late January 2015 following the board of directors’ final approval. Results are preliminary and unaudited. Its sub- sequent passage will result in a more level repayment plan so that a greater share of our budget may return to directly benefiting girls and volunteers. Only three percent of all action by Congress was unanimous during this past year, including this Girl Scout Pension Relief project. � During the annual District Congressional Advocacy Days we met directly with each of the five South Carolina Congressmen whose districts are within our council jurisdiction. We updated them on our state’s Girl Scout legislative agenda and other areas of concern impacting the health and well-being of girls in our council. � We co-hosted one of the South Carolina General As- sembly Women’s Caucus monthly breakfast meet- ings. This bipartisan group comprises our state’s Honorary Girl Scout Troop 1912. � This year’s three-day South Carolina Honorary Legislative Page Program in March included 12 girls from across the state.
