Sermon: Possess the land
Date: 27 July 2014 – morning service
Preacher: Pastor Francois van Niekerk
Introduction
One of the strongest words the Lord has given us was to Take New Territory. While it was a clear word, that gave us strength and focus, it became evident that it would not be limited to a specific season. This is an ongoing assignment to act on and live by!
I sense God wants to commend the Hatfield family for every bit of territory that has recently been taken for His Kingdom. Well done and praise to Him!
There has since been a growing sense that the Holy Spirit wants to add a very important dimension to our territory taking by focusing on the vital next step – Posses the land.
Text: Deuteronomy 1:8a (NIV)
“See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land …”
God wants to usher us into a new season. It is important to remember that every new season requires fresh understanding and engagement.
Main points
God’s goal
Taking territory is a militant action. It includes step-by-step forward movement and laying claim to something (planting your flag). God’s words to Joshua “… every place on which your foot shall tread …” gives expression to this.
(planting your flag).
God’s words to Joshua “… every place on which your foot shall tread …” gives expression to this.
After we’ve taken territory, we need to start possessing it. God’s final goal is for you to possess what He has given you.
I want to take it a step further and state that possessing includes taking full ownership …
… settling down …
… and starting development.
Moving from warring to possessing and building is wonderfully illustrated in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians (emphasis added):
‘The world is unprincipled. It’s dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn’t fight fair. But we don’t live or fight our battles that way – never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren’t for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ.’ (End of warring phase.)
‘Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.’ (Possessing and building phase.)
2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (MSG)
Phase one is to get the ground; phase two is to possess, inhabit and develop it.
Fighting for a piece of land is one thing. But once you’ve won the battle and taken territory, you enter the possessing phase. This means you can start to inhabit the land, develop it and do something with it. You can start moving and working the land. People rarely build on rented land.
God’s goal for His people is to possess!
I believe it is important to engage in both phases because of what I see in people’s personal lives and in the Church. We take territory but never possess it. Territory taken but not possessed, populated and developed is often lost to the enemy again. If we want to see territory taken and kept, we need to know how to possess the land.
2. David and Solomon
David was the most successful king in the history of Israel. He was in essence a warrior-king who led God’s people into many victories and taking territory from their enemies.
When it came to building the Temple, God could not release David to do it because of the blood on his hands. The building phase was assigned to his son Solomon (whose name means peace). This illustrates two distinct phases. In the same way, we have to learn to live in step with the Holy Spirit in moving from a warring, territory-taking phase to a time when we focus on possessing and building. These different phases and seasons require different kinds of engagement. God’s Spirit helps us prepare for each phase and positions us correctly.
Let’s trust that this will happen in our lives during this term – we will continue to take territory and fully possess it.
3. Authority
Possessing includes asserting godly authority. We base our action of fully taking ownership of territory on the fact that God has given us the authority to do so.
We can take possession of spiritual territory and our heritage because of the authority God gives. Think of receiving a deed of sale or the reading of a will which legitimises the ownership of property.
I believe it is high on God’s agenda to confirm you in your authority for the purpose of possessing land in His Name. God’s authority for possessing is mostly given in the specific sphere where He placed and appointed you.
‘We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us, a sphere that also includes you. Neither do we go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others. Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow, our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand …’
2 Corinthians 10:13,15 (NIV)
4. Joy
Asserting God’s authority and taking full possession of what He has given us, is a celebration!
Think of a time in your life when you had the privilege of taking possession of something.
Like owning a home.
Or your first bicycle. Can you remember that joy? Ownership brings joy!
We celebrate the victories God has given us – victories that have come by asserting true Kingdom authority. This enables us to take territory and fully possess what God has given us by settling down and seeing it developed.
Possessing is living in the joy of settling down in the territory given by God!
Application
Let’s pursue possessing the land and celebrating asserting true Kingdom authority. In the weeks to come we will explore topics such as what God wants us to possess and how to possess what He has given us.
I trust this will be a season in which you fully possess what God has given you, and walk in the fullness of His authority and joy!
