8. PHILIPPIANS 2:7-8 NIV
…he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a
servant, being made in human
likeness. And being found in
appearance as a man, he humbled
himself by becoming obedient to
death ‒ even death on a cross!
Date: 15 February 2015 – first morning service
Preacher: Pastor Francois van Niekerk
Theme: Walking with Jesus – 40 days of building friendship
Sermon: Serving like Jesus
Text: Mark 10:45 (TNIV)
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Introduction
During the first week of our 40-day walk with Jesus, we focused on His humility. I trust that it rubbed off on you as you walked with Him.
Next, I want to encourage you to note that serving follows humility. Today we will focus on how Jesus served so that we can model our lifestyles accordingly in the coming week.
To serve or to be served? That is the question we need to settle if we want to walk with Jesus.
Today’s text sums up the attitude that carried Jesus’ whole mission on earth.

To serve or to be served? That is the question we need to settle if we want to walk with Jesus.
Today’s text sums up the attitude that carried Jesus’ whole mission on earth.
‘… he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human being, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!’
Philippians 2:7-8 (TNIV)
This scripture sums up the attitude that carried Jesus’ whole mission on earth.
Main points
Jesus the Servant King
What a paradox – kings don’t serve, they are served! Except the King of heaven, who humbled Himself and served.
‘… he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human being, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!’
Philippians 2:7-8 (TNIV)
In Jesus’ words, “I did not come to be served, but to serve.” For Him serving was not something expressed in isolated acts, it was part of His nature. He also wants to make it part of our nature as we follow Him.
One of the greatest practical examples of service in Jesus’ life on earth was when He washed the feet of His disciples (John 13).
Even more exemplary, is the fact that it included washing the feet of Judas – the man who would betray Him that very night and sell Him out for 30 pieces of silver! Serving like Jesus carries a high price tag. It is not only serving where you choose or where you can draw benefit, but also where God wants you to show His heart.
Can you wear the crown and the towel as Jesus did?
2. Who and what did Jesus serve?
Jesus’ serving was first and foremost towards Father God. His agenda was the will of His Father. This was clearly topped by a Kingdom focus and His greatest service was giving His life on the cross.
Jesus secondly served people – He served sinners, not necessarily saints!
A top priority on His serving agenda was to show His Father’s heart to a lost world. Through His serving He showed people exactly how much the Father loved and cared for them. He did this by healing, feeding, freeing, caring and showing kindness – simply loving people.
‘how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.’
Acts 10:38 (TNIV)
As we walk with Jesus, He will enable us to serve as He did.
Serving like Him is only possible when empowered by the Holy Spirit!
3. Power for serving
Sometimes Jesus directly displayed great power as He miraculously healed people of all kinds of illnesses, but always with the motivation and aim to prove to them that God’s love and care is real.
The power of God is most accurately displayed for the serving of God’s purpose.
an attitude of servanthood authenticates God’s power.
Let’s embrace a commitment to servanthood to see more of God’s power released through our lives!
God can and will entrust more of His power to us if He knows that it will be used to serve His purpose of showing His love and care to people and building His Kingdom.
If we want to walk with Jesus and are willing to let Him shape our lives, it is important to follow His example in this regard.
Everyone inevitably serves someone or some agenda at some stage.
In general our lives are devoted to serve a number of agendas. You have a personal agenda that must be serviced (for example, raising your children, and other family duties). Then there’s a work agenda that must be served, and off course, the overarching agenda of serving God and His will. But you cannot always split these agendas into neat groups. To make matters even worse, the devil also continuously tries to push and deceive his way into getting us to serve his own agenda.
‘You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.’
John 8:44 (TNIV)
It is quite daunting to serve all these agendas! Who are you serving and to who’s agenda are you attending? We can only find the right balance and priorities in our serving by following Jesus.
Let’s devote our lives to serve Jesus and His agenda.
We should serve with excellence, not in a half-hearted or slap-dash fashion. Top-class serving is anticipating a need and addressing it before it becomes a request or demand.
This kind of serving is activated by the Holy Spirit’s instruction and voice, not necessarily by need or urgency.
Jesus served with excellence. Let’s do the same – serving to please God not to impress people!
Application
Serving is about giving! (Jesus’ commitment to serve us resulted in Him giving His life).
Serving is about giving! (Jesus’ commitment to serve us resulted in Him giving His life).
Love and gratitude should be our motive for serving. Serving with no strings attached speaks deeply to people because it stands in such contrast to the ways of the world (always demanding a favour for a favour).
Guard against serving on the basis of feeding your need for acknowledgement or recognition.
May Jesus’ example of serving and the love of which it speaks, inspire and empower you to do the same.
In a time where service delivery is a critical issue, we can make a difference in our nation and for God’s Kingdom by serving like Jesus. (A practical example is to pick up papers in your community.) Ask God to show you where to serve this week. All from God’s love, no strings attached. Wash the feet of the world!
Prayer
‘Lord, thank you for serving so faithfully. I want to follow Your example. Empower me to serve Your purposes and also serve others with Your love and care. Remind me to remember You in everything I do. Amen.’
