The Evolution of Glass and High-Performance Coatings
Bruce Miley – Architectural Design Manager, Guardian Industries
This one-hour interactive presentation provides an overview of the basics of glass and its manufacturing process. It dis-
cussed various types of Low-E technologies available in the market and defines relevant energy terms. The presentation
also uses a case study format and shows multiple project examples to discuss current trends in glass usage, application
and important design considerations.
Curtain Wall and Windows / Unitized Curtain Wall / Window Wall: Traps, Tricks, Success
George Torok – Project Manager, Morrison Hershfield
Atlantic Canada is booming! The skyline is changing with new high-rise office towers, hotels, rental apartments and con-
dominiums. Following design trends in other major Canadian cities, these new buildings typically feature large areas of
site assembled (stick built) curtain wall, strip windows and punch windows. High performance systems and best quality
installation are needed to deal with tough east coast weather. Experts from Morrison Hershfield will describe features,
advantages and disadvantages of traditional stick-built curtain wall and window systems, the use of lab tests to pre-qual-
ify products and mock-ups to assess system performance, field tests to check installed systems and installation details to
surrounding cladding, and the important of regular field reviews to keep the work on track.
Sealant Technology Urethanes vs. Silicones
Scott Waechter, Sr Application Engineering Specialist, Dow Corning
Scott Waechter will speak about the differences in sealant technologies available in the market and why the trend over
the past decade is toward the use of more use of silicone sealants. Scott will also speak about proper building joint de-
sign, best practices in sealant installation, silicone in structural glazing, sealant testing and IG sealants. Additional topics
include Air/vapor barriers and Silicone Transition Strips, LEED, and High performance insulation for curtain walls.

ATTENDEES Keynote: Meeting the Challenge of the 2011 National Energy Code for Buildings
David Kayll, Principal
Nova Scotia has adopted the 2011 National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB), effective December 31, 2014 for all
buildings. Experts from Morrison Hershfield will discuss how the NECB will affect the design process for new build-
ings, general goals to be achieved, compliance paths, selecting opaque and glazed building envelope systems to meet
performance requirements. An important aspect of the NECB is a move away from estimating thermal performance
by combining nominal R-values for individual materials to ‘effective’ thermal performance by including heat loss
through thermal bridges. However, it is still possible to over-estimate thermal performance, resulting in higher than
expected energy bills. There is a better way to design for effective thermal performance that puts the building design-
er in the driver’s seat - we’ll show you how during this seminar.
Innovative Glass Systems/Structural Glass Walls
Alfonso Lopez, Sentech
Alfonso Lopez, the founder of Sentech, will be presenting the recent developments in the design, engineering, and
fabrication of innovative glass systems. The presentation will move between recent advancements in glass engineer-
ing and other topics discussed will be a) system selection in the design of structural glass systems using emerging
technologies, b) custom solutions and new technologies in the fields of structural glazing, c) blast-resistant façades
and d) applications: glass fin walls, tension truss glass systems, tensegrity structures, point supported skylights, glass
canopies, and glass stairways. Fabrication, to recent developments in the design and engineering of glass connections
and supporting structure.
The Education Triad
Jim Brady, Presiding Officer of the Alberta Provincial Apprenticeship Committee
There are three critical components to delivering a strong and successful apprenticeship program. Government, Indus-
tryand the Educator. Recently an announcement was made by the Nova Scotia Government titled “Apprentice System
unified”. Essentially this means the four Atlantic Provinces (Government) are working together to create local appren-
ticeship programs. Four of ten trades have been chosen, six are still to be determined. With one critical component in
place, Jim will discuss the next steps to developing a successful apprenticeship program for educating the work force.

Experts from Morrison Hershfield will discuss how the NECB will affect the design process for new build- ings, general goals to be achieved, compliance paths, selecting opaque and glazed building envelope systems to meet performance requirements. An important aspect of the NECB is a move away from estimating thermal performance by combining nominal R-values for individual materials to ‘effective’ thermal performance by including heat loss through thermal bridges. However, it is still possible to over-estimate thermal performance, resulting in higher than expected energy bills. There is a better way to design for effective thermal performance that puts the building design- er in the driver’s seat - we’ll show you how during this seminar. Innovative Glass Systems/Structural Glass Walls Alfonso Lopez, Sentech Alfonso Lopez, the founder of Sentech, will be presenting the recent developments in the design, engineering, and fabrication of innovative glass systems. The presentation will move between recent advancements in glass engineer- ing and other topics discussed will be a) system selection in the design of structural glass systems using emerging technologies, b) custom solutions and new technologies in the fields of structural glazing, c) blast-resistant façades and d) applications: glass fin walls, tension truss glass systems, tensegrity structures, point supported skylights, glass canopies, and glass stairways. Fabrication, to recent developments in the design and engineering of glass connections and supporting structure. The Education Triad Jim Brady, Presiding Officer of the Alberta Provincial Apprenticeship Committee There are three critical components to delivering a strong and successful apprenticeship program. Government, Indus- tryand the Educator. Recently an announcement was made by the Nova Scotia Government titled “Apprentice System unified”. Essentially this means the four Atlantic Provinces (Government) are working together to create local appren- ticeship programs. Four of ten trades have been chosen, six are still to be determined. With one critical component in place, Jim will discuss the next steps to developing a successful apprenticeship program for educating the work force. Thank you 2014 Glass Connections Platinum Sponsor
