De media draagt bij aan de snelheid en effectiviteit van de
verspreiding van denkbeelden.

 Bij de reformatie is de taverne een plek waar
men met elkaar in publieke debat gaat.
 Tijdens de verlichting in Frankrijk waren dit
koffiehuizen en salons.
De media wordt door beide partijen ingezet waarbij het
publiek voor een keuze komt te staan. Er ontstaat
hierover publiekelijk debat.

6. De orale cultuur blijft van belang
In alle perioden die Briggs en Burke aanhalen is
eigenlijk het grootste gedeelte van de bevolking
analfabeet
De orale cultuur blijft van belang om denkbeelden te
verspreiden onder analfabeten. Middelen zijn preken,
theater, beeldmateriaal, liederen etc.

7. Iconoclasme en censuur
 De beeldenstorm
 In Engeland de Licensing Act en de Stamp Act
Door middel van censuur en iconoclasme wordt
de hoeveelheid denkbeelden ingeperkt en
daarmee ook de mogelijkheid tot publieke
opinie.

questions, because they could now speak the public language of

Interpretation (1990), written by Muhammad
Shahrur, a Syrian civil engineer. To date, it has

circulation of the 800-page book has been
banned or discouraged in many Arab countries,
photocopy machines and pirate editions (printed
in Egypt, among other places) have enabled it to
travel across borders.’
