Editor's Notes
Having worked closely over the past 6 years with some parents who have tended to get a bit over involved, my suspicions is that the great majority are well-intended. I imagine it’s not easy to transition from guiding a child through elementary, middle & high school to college. We need to begin shifting the conversations away from what parents are doing wrong to what they can do right is more useful for all of our teams. This session is packed full of ideas, tips and suggestions on how we can relate to students, their parents and ultimately put them back on the young-adult learning track!
This generation of parents has worked hard to protect their children from stressful experiences, and as a result they have fostered more dependence. The college years are full of new choices never faced alone before from: finances, nutrition, mental/physical health, academics, new relationships and most importantly a new home!Actions will sometimes have uncomfortable consequences. Walking through them with integrity is just as important as resolving them.
75% of parents communicate with college students at least 2-3 times per week. *Annual survey of college parent expectations
Everyone needs to know and understand/embrace youth culture
It’s inevitable that students will contact their parents for advice and support, particularly about their housing experiences. So it is important to a parent to familiarize themselves with the inner workings of their students residence. Having FAQ available just for parents will help to filter this communication and they will be able to coach and guide them through the process instead of diving in and taking control themselves.
Take it a step further and consider creating a top 10 list of do’s and don’t just for parents on your website. For instance parents should not contact the leasing office about their child’s roommate or leasing issues, but rather encourage their student to utilize us as a resource to discuss any concerns they may have. Many times we receive phone calls from parents about concerns/issues their child is having. It’s likely there is a communication breakdown between the parent and the student. Take the phone call as an opportunity where to support and direct both the parent and student to reopen the lines of communication with each other.
Universities have been and continue to expand programs to help parents balance the complexities of stepping in to their children. How can we learn from the universities to be clearer in our messages and get them involved in a mentor rather than hovering way?
Conduct parent surveys much like resident surveys. Parents have a very strong word of mouth movement from miles away!
