The M&A market showed signs of improvement in 2Q14, with deal dollar volume up 4% and deal count up 2% over 1Q14. However, this only represents a gradual recovery and not a significant "breakout". On a year-over-year basis, 1H14 deal activity was up 50% in dollar value and 32% in volume compared to depressed levels in 1H13. While most M&A indicators were positive, PE acquisition activity declined slightly. The improvements seen are largely due to increased activity from non-PE sellers like family businesses. Overall the report finds conditions remain favorable for a stronger M&A market in the second half of 2014, supported by corporate cash levels, low financing costs
