Some people are old at
18 and some people are
young at 90. Time is a
concept that humans
created.
Yoko Ono.
What are problems on old greens?
1. Slower speeds
2. Inconsistency between greens
3. Need to tailor-make maintenance for each
green

4. Different changes happened to each green
5. Sizes/design differ from original
6. Not meeting current standards
7. Old and tired.
Let’s not judge too quickly…
it could be a problem that can be
easily fixed.
What causes problems?
 Grass that are prone to diseases
 Mixed types of grass

 Poor construction
 Old design

 Poor maintenance practices over the
years
Older greens can be disease prone
Prone to disease; why?
 Grass variety – not best choice
 Mixed grass

 Water not flowing / penetrating
 Compaction issues – surface or pan.

 Shade
Simple disease
Compaction over the years & shade
caused by now-tall trees
Drainage problems
Poor maintenance
Bad construction
Black layer
Mixed grass
What can you choose to do?
 Nothing.
 Extra cultural practice

 Change surface/grass
 Renovate parts of or only a few greens

 Rebuild all.
Do nothing if you get what you want
Extra cultural practice
 More aggressive

 Deeper aeration
 Scarifying instead of just
dethatching.
 Repair only parts of the green
Change only a few greens
 This problem green
 the worse three, six or nine greens.
Change all 18 greens
 Maybe by doing two greens per year
 But your golf course is always a “work
in progress” until complete all 18
 Or 6 or 9 greens a year: not too long.
 Ensure grass are from same source!
Do it in phases

Some clubs: Bite the bullet.
 Do all 18 greens one shot

 Build temporary greens
 Or Close the course
Why need to do?
 Because it may spread: disease
 Because it may spread: mixed grass.
 Because it will not go away on its own.
 Because it damages the club’s name
 Because it damages the GM, committee and Supt’s
reputation.
 Because it is annoying to members or regulars.
How?
 Build temporary greens at all holes or,
 Turn one long par-5s into two holes:
one par-4 & one par-3, or
 Build a temporary hole (if you have
space)
Can also do half a green at a time.
But may end up with Same but different
Tifdwarf on 1 green

Editor's Notes

  • #3 What are the problems of a 20 year old green.
  • #4 Questions on credibility. The golf clubs I’ve worked in.
  • #5 Now lets take a look at problems facing 20 year old greens. Old does not mean bad. But unlike humans; old greens are not ‘experienced’ greens! So when we say 20-year-old greens; it does not mean greens that are exactly 20 years old. There are some greens that are only a few years old but having problems that are difficult to treat. And I’ve seen greens that are reportedly built in 1929 still doing better than many other greens built 20 years ago. Lets not judge too quickly.
  • #6 NOT ALL 20-YEAR OLD GREENS WILL HAVE THE SAME OR EVEN ANY OF THESE OR DIFFERENT PROBLEMS. Those days, greens running at 8 feet was considered fast. Now more players are asking for faster greens. Not all old greens are slow. But old greens are harder to predict and harder to speed up than newer greens planted with the new breed of grasses. On 18 holes, you can find greens putting or playing differently from each other. Because there are more of one type of grass on one green than on another green. Or one green was rebuilt because of whatever reason so it is different than others. Or because of different micro-environment reasons. Which is also reason why some greens need more fertilizer or more fungicide than others. Or more tender loving care than others. We have to learn to tailor-make a different kind of maintenance from one green to another. The greens will behave differently whenever a new factor is introduced; e.g. rain, drought, tournament preparation etc. Some greens dry out faster so need more water. Some greens need to be rolled more to get same speed. Greens sizes have changed over the years – usually smaller or the sides are different now – further from bunker or lake. Most clubs don’t measure every year. And some golf course designer find that the golf course has Golfers have played in more courses and more exposed to courses in other countries and demand more from their own courses. The design may need to be improved – some courses are not professionally designed – some courses may want to have new designs.
  • #9 Prone to diseasesNeed more tender loving careFor various reasons:Grasses not well chosen.
  • #12 Simple to treat diseases
  • #15 Poor maintenanceDisease does not happen in straight lines.
  • #16 Bad construction; sand, silt and organic matter not properly mixed together. Caused layering issues.
  • #17 Telling asupt he got black layer is like AIDS.
  • #19 I am talking only about what can be done. I am not recommending anything to anybody without some sort of investigation.
  • #22 Or just change the grass. No-till method.
  • #24 Taking too long may make people say that you are always under construction.
  • #27 Disease start from 1 or 2 green and spread to other greensThe weeds will spread by machinery and golfersThe problems will remain or recur regularly even after treatment if the cause is not treated.
  • #29 Not recommendedMight end up like this guy.
  • #31 Gentlemen, your club may be one of the best in this part of the country, I am sure you are proud of your club. And of course I believe it is because your club, the golf course is in very good condition. But maybe it is time to TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL: click.
