Tim Berners-Lee, a physicist at CERN, proposed and developed ENQUIRE, a system for researchers to share documents in 1980. In 1989, he wrote a memo proposing an internet-based hypertext system which became the foundation of the World Wide Web. He then specified HTML and wrote the first browser and server software in 1990, developing the core technologies which underpin the modern web.
