ECONOMIC
IMPACT OF
CORONA
VIRUS
• The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was first discovered
during a pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan city (China)
which has raised a global public health concern, as the city
consists of around 11 million people and is considered a
major transport and logistics hub.
• The Chinese government warned that the transmission
ability of the virus is increasing, and international efforts
are needed to overcome this outbreak.
• The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public
Health Emergency of International Concern regarding
COVID-19 on 30 January 2020, and later declared a
pandemic on 11 March 2020.
EMERGENCE
OF COVID-19
GLOBAL IMPACT OF COVID-19
⯀ The Covid-19 pandemic slowdown has deeply impacted businesses
and jobs around the world.
⯀ At the height of the COVID lockdown, more than 160 countries had
mandated some form of school closures for at least 1.5 billion children
and youth.
⯀ Rise in global food insecurity.
⯀ The pandemic has pushed nearly 88 million people into extreme
poverty.
⯀ As economic conditions force families to make difficult decisions on
household spending, concerns about student dropout rates have
grown.
● Telecommuting has become the norm for most companies
● Some distilleries are using alcohol for making hand sanitizers
● Some clothing companies have switched to manufacturing face masks in
order to ease local or national face mask shortage
● Many markets aren’t being able to sell all the fish because their main
customers (restaurants) don’t need them, as they’re closed
● Hotel owners are offering their rooms to hospitals as additional rooms for
infected people with COVID-19
● Streaming platforms have decided to slightly decrease their video quality in
response to an increased demand (due to home isolation) to ensure that
videos can play properly

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF COVID-19
ON INDIA
The coronavirus pandemic had largely disruptive impact
almost all the economic sectors of India.
• Online food grocery platforms are heavily impacted
due to unclear restrictions on movements and stoppage
of logistics vehicles.
• Cross-border trade had become cumbersome and
more expensive.
• A sharp rise in wholesale inflation was recorded in
March and economists believe that wholesale inflation
could lead to higher retail prices, which will ultimately
impact household savings amid the Covid-19 crisis.
SOCIAL IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON INDIA
• Gender-based violence, lack of security, money, and health have added on
to the existing misery of families living in poor and substandard conditions.
• Repeated lockdown extensions have led to a struggle for basic needs like
food and shelter, frustration, disproportionate sharing of domestic
responsibilities, and violence against the vulnerable members of the
household.
• An increase in the levels of anxiety, aggression, depression, forgetfulness,
and hallucinations are reported as psychological effects of isolation.
• During the lockdown, more than 300 deaths were reported by the media,
with reasons ranging from starvation, suicides, exhaustion, road and rail
accidents, police brutality, and denial of timely medical care.
• Positive impact of this lockdown is that it has given a golden opportunity for
people working from home to spend more time with their parents, spouse,
and children.
