Evrim Ersu is applying to be a member of Duke University's swimming team. She has been a competitive swimmer in Turkey for over 5 years, practicing 6,500 meters per day. She was chosen for the Turkish national team at the 2011 European Youth Olympics. Ersu believes her hard work and discipline as a swimmer have prepared her well for the academic and athletic demands of Duke. She intends to study mechanical engineering and hopes to become an Olympian with the coaching from Duke's team. Ersu has uploaded video of her races and included her academic and swimming honors and statistics to demonstrate her qualifications.
A ppt and a video compilation presented to my daughter's 5th grade class along with a presentation on "Career Day" where I tried to equate some life lessons from the pursuit of amateur athletics to a career choice. My main goal was to stress that there are no entitlements, there are no guarantees - if you work hard, if you dedicate yourself to the pursuit of something you love, you will reap the rewards... Something I do not htink many kids hear these days, in the era of "trophies for all!"...
Velocity is a sports performance facility that teaches athletes of ages 7 and up the techniques that will help them achieve optimal sport performance. These techniques are taught through certified instruction by coaches such as myself who develop, implement, and evaluate sport performance programs. I created a PowerPoint that highlights my experience as an intern at Velocity Sports Performance. I have gained so much through these experiences and my mentorship.

2. Dear Coach Dan Colella,
I am writing to state my interest in joining your team and pursue my undergraduate degree in engineering
sciences at Duke University my dream school.
As a determined, hard-working, disciplined athlete chosen to be a team member for European Youth
Olympics in 2011 as a part of the team Turkey, I am frequently described as a “soldier” by my current
coach. Being a high-ranked competitive swimmer for more than 5 years, practicing 6,500 m/day did not
only help me to build physical endurance, but also prepared me mentally against solving challenges in
school and daily life.
Swimming not only thought me to be a disciplined athlete but also honed my skills in multi-tasking, team
ethics and leadership.
First and foremost, I learned to manage my time and prioritize. While most of my classmates studied for
hours to take exams, I learned to prepare myself for the same test in a shorter period, attending my
trainings and still feeling both mentally and physically strong and still was able to get 3.2/4 GPA average.
As I like mathematics and physics, I want to major in mechanical engineering, which requires a lot of
studying and hard work. Given that your university is excellent in both academics and athletics, I believe
that I can manage my social and athletic life while managing the requirements of my coursework. It is very
important for me to enroll in a school that combines both.
One of the most important skills I gained through swimming is how to be a leader and a good team player
at the same time. I learnt how to motivate my peers, challenge them when necessary and support each
other to grow. Swimming may rather seem to be an individualist sport but evidently your team becomes
as close as your family. I find it crucial that you need to have a supportive, connected team to grow as an
individual athlete. That is why, when one of my teammates needs help, I would go out of my way if
necessary to solve his problem and be there for him. The 4x100 medley race is a good example as it is a
tough one that does not only require physical strength, but also a lot of motivation and team collaboration
as well.
I know that there is still great room for improvement in my swimming. I am fully aware and strongly
motivated to keep working hard in order to realize my potential to the fullest. I can imagine the dedication
and hard-work it takes to become an Olympian and with proper training with your team and under your
supervision, I believe I can.
I look forward to a your feedback, and hopefully discussing my potential place and contributions in your
team.
Thank you,
EvrimErsu
