3. The land for the city of Amritsar belongs to the villages Tung, Sultanwind, Gilwali and Gumtala. These
particular villages came under tehsil Patti and Distt. Chhabal during the Guru’s time.Guru Amardas Ji
alongwith Guru Ram Das, Baba Budha Ji visited and found a lonely and peaceful area in the centre of these
villages. At that time this piece of land was bought from the villagers for 700 Rs.

4. Mir Mohammed Muayyinul Islam, (1550-1635) popularly
known as Sain Mian Mir was a famous Muslim Sufi saint
who resided in Lahore specifically in the town of
Begampura.
Guru Arjan Devji often visited Lahore, the birth-place of
his father to meet his relatives. On the occasion of one of
such visit, he called on Mian Mir. The two men of God met
and became life-long friends. He travelled often to
Amritsar to meet with Guru Arjan Dev ji. In turn whenever
the Guru visited Lahore, he would always meet with Saint
Mian Mir. Saint Mian Mir knew a large number of the
Gurus' verses by heart. Mian Mir was thirteen years older
than Guru Arjan.
In 1588, Guru Arjan Dev ji, planned to build a temple in the
centre of holy tank called Amritsar. As the temple was to
be thrown open to people of all castes,he invited Mian Mir
to lay the foundation stone of the Harmandir Sahib.

5. In 1606, Mian Mir came to see Shri Guru Arjan Dev ji when he was imprisoned in the
Lahore fort and tortured .He found Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji calm and serene, having
completely resigned himself to the will of God. Mian Mir suggested to the Guru whether
he should intercede with Emperor Jahangir on his behalf. The Guru forbade him saying
that God's will must have its course unchecked, as it was not proper to interfere with His
workings. He asked only for the saint's blessings for his son, Har Gobind.
A couple of years after Shri Guru Arjan Dev ji, his son Shri Guru Har Gobind Sahib ji, at
age of thirteen, called on Mian Mir at Lahore.
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the son of Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji, as a child met Mian Mir
who blessed him.

6. In December 1588 the great Muslim Sufi saint of Lahore, Hazrat Mian Mir, who was a close friend of Shri
Guru Arjan Dev Ji, initiated the construction of the temple by laying the first foundation stone.
A mason then straightened the stone but Shri Guru Arjan Dev ji told him that, as he had undone the
work just completed by the holy man, a disaster might come to the Harmandir Sahib. It was later
attacked by the Mughals.
The temple was completed in 1604. Guru Arjan Dev, installed the Guru Granth Sahib in it and appointed
Baba Buddha Ji as the first Granthi of it on August 1604 AD. In the mid 18th century it was attacked by
the Afghans, by one of Ahmed Shah Abdali's Generals, Jahan Khan, and had to be substantially rebuilt
in the 1760s. However, in response a Sikh Army was sent to hunt down the Afghan force. They were
under orders to show no mercy and historical evidence suggests none was shown. Both forces met each
other 5 miles outside Amritsar; Jahan Khan's army was destroyed. He himself was decapitated by
commander Sardar Dayal Singh.
