I would suggest that IBM use Cloud computing services over Broadband. Broadband is
not that reliable in my experience; I have had problems with the system failing or losing
signals for hours. Every technology claims to be the best, and deliver the fastest and
reliable service. Cloud computing allows for the service to be monitored by the IT
department for malfunctions, or security breaches. It operates thru multiple sites, instead of
frequencies. You are able to utilize the service at different locations, but Broadband has a
problem of allowing this to occur sometimes. IBM needs a service that has a strong data
storage because this is essential for the needs of its consumers, which Cloud computing can
provide. “IBM is a highly vertically integrated company; it integrated back into the chip
and memory disk industry to produce the components that work inside its mainframes and
servers, and integrated forward into the computer software and consulting service
industries.” (Page 288 – Hill, Schilling, Jones) This statement says a lot, and this is why I
believe that Cloud computing would be a perfect fit because it aligns with computer
technology, which IBM is known for.
Amazon states, "It has benefited from massive economies scales, trade capital expense for
the variable expense, stop guessing capacity, increase speed and agility, saves money on
running and maintaining data centers, and can go Global in minutes."

I would not recommend just one method for IBM to use when
diversifying into the
telecommunications industry. A combination of the internal new
venturing and
acquisition methods is what I would recommend to IBM.
Internal new venturing
would allow IBM to leverage the competencies they have
developed in their current
industry (hardware, middleware, and software for computers)
and apply them to the
telecommunications industry. With an acquisition, IBM is able
to acquire a company
that has the capital/infrastructure that would allow IBM to
rapidly enter the
telecommunications industry with little delay. IBM can combine
the competencies
they have with the infrastructure of the company they acquired
to help create a
competitive advantage in a new industry to IBM. With this
combined diversification
method strategy and the brand recognition that IBM already has,
getting into the
telecommunications industry would be fairly successful for
them.

IBM is in the business of making computer software and
hardware, as well as some consulting
services. As a company it would make sense after years of
successful business that would be
interested in integrating new industries into their corporate
6. structure. There are a few options as
far as integration goes. IBM could either acquire companies that
are similar to themselves in
order to achieve economies of scale and to increase product
differentiation, or they move
vertically in order to strengthen their supply chain. It is in this
way that IBM would best be able to
diversify into the telecommunications and cloud-computing data
servicing: through vertical
integration. Acquiring another company such as Adobe would
allow them to help build more
barriers to entry for software and cloud management. Coupling
these two industries would allow
IBM to use their competitive advantage of a core manufacturing
that they already have in place
and acquire another industry that once established would cost
them almost nothing to add new
customers to an existing base. If the software is in place it
would be virtually free of charge for
them to add new customers after the initial onset.

IBM identifies as a company that is innovative and constantly
pursuing technological change (IBM, n.d.). It
seems their competencies are continuously creating
breakthrough and innovative technology, which is used in
many different industries including telecommunications (IBM,
n.d.). IBM is present in about 19 different
industries where they use their technologies to do business. If
IBM pursues related diversification, they will
most likely be able to use their current skills and resources to
enter the telecommunications market. IBM already
uses what they call the IBM Cloud which allows for
professionals to readily have access to their applications
8. and data centers (IBM, n.d.). If I were in a corporate-level
management position, I would consider utilizing the
internal new venturing method to enter the telecommunications
industry. This way, IBM is able to transfer some
of their resources and create a new business unit, broad-band
access, to innovate new products (Hill, Schilling,
& Jones, 2017).
I believe IBM would be successful in utilizing this strategy
because they are not trying to outsource and risk
excess spending, and they are efficiently using their expertise
across value chain functions to share resources
and hopefully save on material and manufacturing costs. Also,
I’d guess the future of broad-band access is
looking good. I don’t think anyone will ever stop using mobile
devices that might require wireless broadband.
There may be a risk in IBM entering this huge industry,
however, it seems like if they have the capital and
resources, they could be successful, if not right away then
possibly over time. IBM offers many other products
in different industries, which I think just makes them more
marketable by appealing to many different types of
customers needing different things.
To successfully commercialize these services, I think it would
be beneficial to research what customer’s needs
aren’t being met by competitors and how they can meet those
needs.

In order for IBM to diversify, using the acquisition method to
enter into broadband
communications would be most beneficial. When IBM acquired
SoftLayer in 2015 it allowed IBM
to further enhance the company’s (IBM) technological
capabilities, while acquiring the necessary
means to embark on a new venture. SoftLayer was an already
established company with a
connection to building a better model – including enhancing the
privacy and reliability of private
clouds and matching those services with the speed and financial
resources of a public cloud.
The acquisition method allows companies to offset the risk of
acquiring such services and can
eliminate barriers to entering such a largely competitive field.
To be successful however, IBM will
need to support this initiative with funding that allows the
11. company to provide a ‘new’ and
‘better’ technology marketed to consumers as IBM is behind in
jumping on board with this type
of initiative.
