This document is a sermon outline from First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi on October 1, 2017 about Exodus 16 and the Israelites being provided manna from heaven while wandering in the desert. The key points are:
1) The Israelites grumbled about their situation and lack of food in the wilderness. God promised to provide bread from heaven in response.
2) God provided a substance called manna each morning for the Israelites to eat. It sustained them for 40 years until they reached the promised land.
3) Jesus compares himself to the manna provided in the wilderness, saying he is the "bread of life" who came down from heaven to give eternal life to all who believe in him.
Why do you think Rahab is listed among the “heroes” of faith in Hebrews 11? Do you feel that some sins in your past or present are so terrible that they can’t be forgiven or that you are unworthy to serve God? How does Rahab’s story encourage you? What was the emotional state of the people in Jericho? (Josh. 2:9, 11; 6:1) How did this confirm God’s promises in Deut. l:21, 29–31? Read carefully Josh. 2:9–13. What did Rahab know about Israel's history? How long before had the Red Sea been crossed? (Ex. l4). How long before had Sihon and Og been conquered? (Deut. 2:26-3:ll) What did Rahab specifically say she believed about the God of Israel? What is impressive about her faith? Could anyone else in Jericho have come to the same conclusions?
Unfortunately, at times even a church can condone sexual immorality. It happens every day now as churches redefine and explain away God's definition of marriage. In his letter to the church of Thyatira, Jesus tells us how seriously he views us calling sin simply "alternative" or "acceptable" or "tolerant" views. In particular, pornography is destroying nations.

1. Imagine yourself appearing before God. What will you do? …say? …feel? What would you change if you knew your appearance before God was today? How does your relationship with God now affect your appointment before Him eventually?

To ‘atone’ means to reconcile, to make right and recompense
God commands us to celebrate the atonement each year, which points to the time when Christ will blot away our sins with his blood.

Not unlike the effects of today’s Coronavirus, the older generation of Israel in the wilderness were dying. Numbers 20 begins with the death of Miriam (1) and concludes with the death of Aaron (28, 29). If you were to die today, what legacy would you leave? When was the last time you murmured or complained about something associated with COVID-19? What was your complaint? How did your criticism or complaint change you, your relationship with God and those around you? Why did the Lord send “fiery serpents among the people” (21:6)? What was Moses’ response when he heard their complaints and saw God’s judgment? (7) How should we be like Moses? What was the Lord’s response? (8) Why did Jesus compare Himself to Moses’ brazen serpent? (John 3:14-16) Why do many (sadly most) people refuse to look and live? (8)
Upon coming to the Promised Land, the Hebrews must choose whether to embrace the future God has led them to, or to turn away. The metaphor is for the Kingdom of God that we as Christians profess. "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done..." but when it means risking our comfort and convenience, will we too turn away?

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Points in the Lesson Today – Exodus 16
• How the giving of manna is like God’s Word.
• How the giving of Jesus Christ as Savior is like manna.
• Jesus Christ is the “Bread of Life”.
Jesus is the “Word” and the “Bread of Life”
• John 1:1-2
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
• John 6:35
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall
not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Remember this?
3. Introduction to Exodus 16
• The Israelites had crossed the Red Sea one month earlier and camped at
Elim.
• Elim had 12 springs/wells for water and 70 palm date trees. An oasis in the
desert.
• Exodus 12:38 says that there were non-Israelites who escaped with them –
referred to as the “mixed multitude” (mixed race).
Exodus 16:1
1 They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to
the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the
second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt.
Exodus 16:2-3
2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses
and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that
we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the
meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this
wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4. Children’s Vacation Bible School Song
“Are You Humbly Grateful or Grumbly Hateful?”
Grumbling – to complain, to whine
1. Grumbling is a problem of perception and distorts our view.
2. Grumbling is a problem of submission.
3. Grumbling is a sin of the tongue, which is closely related to disobedience.
4. Grumbling is like a communicable disease.
5. Grumbling is the result of a failure in our faith.
Jesus addressed this
Matthew 6:31-33
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we
drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and
your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom
of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Exodus 16:4-5
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for
you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I
may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when
they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”
Exodus 16:11-21
11 And the Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the people of
Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall
be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”
13 In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew
lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face
of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the
people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not
know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has
given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one
of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the
number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’” 17 And the people of
Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. 18 But when they measured it
with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever
gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. 19
And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.” 20 But
they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred
worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21 Morning by morning they
gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it
melted.
5. More details about manna
Numbers 11:7-9
7 Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of
bdellium. 8 The people went about and gathered it and ground it in handmills or
beat it in mortars and boiled it in pots and made cakes of it. And the taste of it
was like the taste of cakes baked with oil. 9 When the dew fell upon the camp in
the night, the manna fell with it.
Meaning of the word “manna”
• Exodus 16:31
31 Now the house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander
seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.
• Manna = “what’s this?” a derogatory term.
• God always refers to it as “bread from heaven” in scripture.
• The Israelites refer to it as “manna”.
Historical Myths About Manna
• The taste was dependent on your desire – it tasted like whatever you were
hungry for.
• The manna saved for the Sabbath tasted “special”.
• It dissolved completely into your body – no bathroom stops!
• It formed on the Tamarisk trees from lice eating the tree sap and excreting
the manna.
Measurements of manna
• Omer = 6 pints.
• There were about 2,000,000 people to feed (600,000 men plus women and
children).
• Need 9,000,000 pounds or 4500 tons of manna per day.
• It fell every morning (except Sabbath) on schedule for 40 years.
• No “natural phenomena” could produce this daily, on time, wherever the
Israelites were for 40 years.
6. How is manna like God’s Word?
1. It is necessary for life (physical and spiritual).
• Jesus’ answer to Satan when tempted in the desert.
• Matthew 4:2-4
2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the
tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command
these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is
written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
2. It is a supernatural gift.
• 2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man
of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
3. It came to where the people were.
• Manna only fell where the Israelites camped.
• John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever
believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
4. The color white symbolizes purity and righteousness.
• Manna was bdellium (white) in color.
• Psalm 12:6
6 The words of the LORD are pure words,
like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.
5. It does you no good unless you consume (eat) it.
• Joshua 1:8
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do
according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way
prosperous, and then you will have good success.
6. It needs to be consumed daily.
• Deuteronomy 6:6-7
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them
when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when
you lie down, and when you rise.
7. 7. Gathering in the morning was the schedule.
• Mark 1:35
35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he (Jesus)
departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.
8. The position for gathering is on our knees.
• Mark 14:35
35 And going a little farther, he (Jesus) fell on the ground and prayed
that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
• Acts 21:5
5 And kneeling down on the beach, we (Paul and people of Tyre)
prayed and said farewell to one another. Then we went on board the
ship, and they returned home.
Let’s look at how Jesus uses manna to teach about Himself in John 6.
• Jesus had fed the 5,000.
• The crowds follow Jesus and the disciples and are ready to eat again.
• They ask for another sign or miracle and mention the manna that was
provided by Moses for their forefathers.
• Let’s pick up the story in John 6:27.
Jesus compares His first coming to manna.
John 6:27-29
27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal
life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his
seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of
God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him
whom he has sent.”
8. God provided the manna, not Moses.
John 6:30-32
30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe
you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness;
as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to
them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from
heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
Jesus is the Bread of Life.
John 6:33-35
33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the
world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not
hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Jesus continues.
John 6:48-51
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of
life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the
bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I
am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread,
he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my
flesh.”
What is Jesus trying to teach here?
• Just as God provided for physical needs with manna from heaven, God
sent Jesus from heaven to provide for our spiritual needs.
How is the gift of Jesus like manna?
• Jesus came to the “Wilderness of Sin” (Earth) from heaven.
• Manna first came in the Wilderness of Sin.
• Jesus was born to a homeless family and was buried in a borrowed grave.
• Manna was given to a group of homeless people.
• Manna was given in glory.
• Exodus 16:10
10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of
Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the
Lord appeared in the cloud.
• Jesus came in glory.
• John 1:14
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his
glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
9. How is the gift of Jesus like manna?
• Jesus and manna were given as free gifts.
• Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in
Christ Jesus our Lord.
• A daily need (physical and spiritual) is met.
• The Lord’s Prayer.
• Matthew 6:11
11 “Give us this day our daily bread,”
• The color of manna was white and suggestive of purity.
• Jesus was without sin.
• 1 John 3:5
5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there
is no sin.
Is there significance of manna falling with the dew?
• Numbers 11:9
9 When the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell with it.
• Dew is condensation of water on the ground.
• Water is symbolic of the Holy Spirit in the Bible.
• Manna is symbolic of the Word of God.
• The Holy Spirit must be present to apply the Word of God to our spiritual
lives.
Closing Thoughts.
John 6:53-54
53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the
Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my
flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
54 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my
flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
Explanation of the analogy of eating Jesus’ flesh and drinking His blood.
1. The eating of His flesh is “placing your faith” in Jesus as your Savior.
a. Food must be eaten.
2. Eating involves “trust” that you will benefit and not be harmed.
a. You “trust” Jesus to forgive your sins and make you right before
God.
3. Eating is personal.
a. You cannot eat by proxy.
b. Accepting Jesus is a personal decision.
4. The result is “abundant life” and “eternal life”.
10. Jesus’ Final Statement About Manna.
• John 6:58 (NIV)
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate
manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread (Jesus) will live
forever.”
• Have you eaten the Bread of Life?
