Possessives
To understand the use of possessive
adjectives and possessive pronouns.
Objective
Possessions
Asking about who owns (possesses) something:
Example: Whose clothes are those on the floor?
• We begin the question with WHOSE, and the
next word is normally the item.
Example: Whose cell phone is ringing?
• If the item is clear, then it is not necessary to
say the item:
Example: Whose is this?
Possessive Adjectives
They are used to show that a person owns (has possession of) something:
These are my
crayons
Those are his
crayons
Possessive Adjectives are placed before the object that is owned (possessed)
and any description.
For example: her dog, my beautiful ring, his friends, etc.

Possessive pronouns
• WHAT? – A short easy way to indicate possession, when we don’t want to
use or repeat the names of people and things.
• WHY? - So, we don’t repeat information that is clear.
• WHERE? – Any place we have a Possessive Adjective and the name of the
item, it is possible to use Possessive Pronouns IF IT IS CLEAR WHAT THE
ITEM IS.
Example:
This pencil is my pencil, not your pencil. (Repetitive)
This pencil is mine, not yours. (your pencil)
