This document discusses racial microaggressions, which are brief everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to people of color. The authors identify three types of microaggressions - microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations - and provide examples of nine themes of racial microaggressions with accompanying hidden messages and assumptions. The taxonomy of racial microaggressions was developed through a literature review on everyday racism and personal narratives.
