Contingency theory proposes that a leader's effectiveness depends on how well their leadership style fits the current situation, with certain styles being more effective depending on factors like the leader-member relations, task structure, and the leader's position power. The theory was developed by Fred Fiedler in 1964 and suggests matching a leader's task-motivated or relationship-motivated style to the right setting based on an assessment of the least preferred coworker to determine which styles are best suited to certain situations.
