This has got to be something
classic but classy. Plump for a
bottle of Bergerie de l’Hortus
Pic Saint Loup 2012 from
Domaine de L’Hortus in the
Languedoc. This offers
old-world soil and heritage,
combined with modern
winemaking by famille ‘Orliac’,
who first rented vines here in
1978. Vibrant, pure and
concentrated, this is a juicy
wine, great for subsequent
dinner invitations and
fantastic value for money.
£10.25, slurp.co.uk, Berry Bros
& Rudd.

Charles Heidsieck, Blanc des Millénaires 1995.
Millésime is a name only bequeathed to a bottle in
a superior year, so for that premier moment in
your career it makes an apt choice. ‘Champagne
Charlie’, as he was nicknamed, is alleged to have
introduced Champagne to the US in the mid-19th
century. Notable aromas give this wine a toasty
nuttiness, with raisins and spice. There’s a
definite creaminess, combined with cinnamon,
nougat and vanilla spice. Rich and complex, the
bubbles wrap your tongue with vigour, and the
flavour lasts and lasts — it is, after all, almost 20
years old. £138.50, Hedonism Wines.

If you can lay your hands on a bottle of 2011
Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Cazetiers, 1er Cru by
Olivier Bernstein, then do. It does not come cheap
and is not quite ready for drinking. Olivier himself
advises to give it another two or three years in
bottle, when it should then wake up like you do
on a sunny day. Give it 30-40 years and it will
keep on giving. It’s medium-bodied, packed with
fresh dark fruit and shiny levels of savoury,
meaty and minerally flavours that evoke wet
stone and steel. £150 a bottle, £612 for 6, Berry
Brothers and Rudd.

Forget Pinot Grigio, the new ‘P’
on the block is Picpoul de Pinet.
Made from Picpoul Blanc grapes
that hail from the Languedoc in
France, picpouls generally offer
zesty, fresh, crisp white wines
(sometimes with a little spritz)
that make the ideal aperitifs and
will go well with any kind of
canapé. Try a bottle of Domaine
de Guillermarine 2013, RRP
£8.95, loveyourwine.co.uk, The
Dorset Wine Company.

California is having something of a city revival.
Young, dynamic winemakers are punching
above the weight of previous producers and
setting a new tone. This MooBuzz offers a Pinot
Noir but not as you know it; it’s fruitier, slightly
weightier, will go with red meat or something
lighter and is made by August Sebastiani — a
man whose family is infused with Italian
heritage but who is based
in Monterey County.
MooBuzz is a play on the
phrase ‘land of milk and
honey’ and the packing is
pretty cool too. Find it at
Galvin la Chapelle, MASH,
Goodman, Sager + Wilde,
The Three Crowns CUT at
45 Park Lane, Capital
Hotel, Grosvenor House
Hotel, The Palomar, Town
Hall Hotel or WC Clapham
for around £40, or on the
shelves at Roberson.
Great value.

Argentinian wine is still on the up, and this
one, a blend of sultry black European-born
grapes, comes from the oldest family
winery in Mendoza. Familia Arizu began
winemaking in 1901 and still run the
estate today — now in their fifth generation
of winemakers. This bottle of Testimonio
2011 is the ideal autumn-winter tipple that
works with or without food. Soft, silky,
fruity flavours will fill your mouth at a
highly drinkable price. £9.74 on promotion,
Majestic.

This has to be a bottle of Nyetimber English
Sparkling Wine. Move over Champagne, the
English are showing the French a thing or two
about how to make ‘traditional method’ bubbles
and this is one of the UK’s leading ‘houses’. This
wine from West Sussex is made from the same
grapes as its French counterpart, and is grown on
soils and under weather conditions that are
largely very similar. This award-winning
Nyetimber Classic Cuvée offers yeasty, citrusy
notes and is both sophisticated and suitably
expensive to make it feel like a treat. £32-£35,
Waitrose, Fortnum & Mason.

Lock yourself in the attic and
attack a bottle of Château
Mouton-Rothschild 1945, Pauillac
1er Cru classé. From one of the
most iconic wine estates in the
world, this bottle bursts with
heritage. Charles Foley, junior wine
specialist at Christie’s, says:
“Imagine: wine sitting calmly in
casks under the French soil whilst
war comes to a blessed end.”
Bottled with a V for victory
symbol, this gives double reason to
celebrate, and something
guaranteed to be uninterruptedly
memorable from the first sip.
£12,404.80, Hedonism Wines.
