Executive Summary
Fuel Your Brain, Not Your Belly is a program that has been developed in hopes
of reducing rates of obesity. With Michigan having one of the highest rates of obesity in
the United States, it is time to take charge and implement a program that will reduce this
life threatening epidemic. Obesity stems from a lack of knowledge in nutrition and
exercise. This program will involve building a foundation for the children within their
schools in the West Bloomfield School District that will educate them on how to live a
long, healthy life. If children are taught from a young age about how to stay healthy and
fuel their brains, there is no doubt that we can reduce rates of obesity. We are requesting a grant in the amount of $50,000 from The Gates Foundation to assist in funding the startup costs of our venture. These startup costs include the costs of local produce, nutrition days, raising awareness, and Fuel Your Brain goody bags which include helpful take home information for the children.
Proposal Description
Children that grow up with a lack of knowledge in nutrition and exercises to stay
healthy, tend to have a greater chance of becoming obese. When a child lacks knowledge
of proper nutrition and a steady exercise routine, they are not only affecting their physical appearance. The inside of their bodies are significantly affected. Obesity decreases an
individual’s life expectancy, reduces attention span and ...

F&A Wellness
Council
Newsletter
Issue #3: Summer 2014
IN THIS ISSUE
Did you make a resolution this year to
exercise more? Eat less? Quit smoking?
Were you eager to begin your new lifestyle
change on January 1st but by Valentine’s Day
found you were back to your old habits?
If so, you’re not alone. But don’t let this
discourage you completely or give up
entirely! Today can be your change to have a
“do-over” and begin again. Or you can start
a new resolution to eat healthier, exercise
more or smoke less! Here are a few helpful
tips to help you turn that resolution into a
habit.
1. Make your goal a reasonable one. As the
old saying goes, you have to learn to crawl
before you can run. Make your goal today to
take in a few less calories or to find a way to
burn off a few more. Even a small amount
like shaving off 100 calories per day can make
a huge difference!
2. Focus on one goal at a time. If you want
to give up smoking, don’t also try to lose a
large amount of weight and begin a new
exercise regime. Pick goal and work toward
it. Break it down into small steps and create
trigger points in your daily routine to help
remind you of your goal.
3. Get support. Don’t be afraid to tell friends
and family that you’re making this change
and that you need their encouragement and
support. And don’t forget there are a
plethora of resources available (many of
them free!) at:
http://partnersforhealthtn.gov/
4. Write down your goals. Putting a goal
down in black and white on a piece of paper
or your computer can help you work toward.
It can also help you create the steps you need
to work toward the change in your life.

Immunization helps prevent dangerous and
sometimes deadly diseases. To stay
protected against serious illnesses like the
flu, measles, and tuberculosis, adults need to
get their shots – just like kids do.
National Immunization Awareness Month
is a great time to promote vaccines and
remind family, friends, and coworkers to stay
up to date on their shots
Everyone age 6 months and older needs to
get a flu shot every year. Other shots work
best when they are given at certain ages.
If you have a child age 6 or
younger, find out which shots your
child needs.
Find out which shots adults and
teenagers need.
Use this chart for adults to see if
you are up to date on your shots
[PDF – 156 KB].
If you are pregnant, check out this
recommended immunization
schedule [PDF – 188 KB].
We also encourage you to:
Talk to friends and family members
about how vaccines aren’t just for
kids. People of all ages can get
shots to protect them from serious
diseases.
Encourage people in your
community to get the flu shot
every year.
Invite a doctor or nurse to speak to
parents about why it’s important
for all kids to get vaccinated.
