This document provides the mark scheme for a mathematics exam. It shows how examiners were instructed to award marks for different parts of student responses. The mark scheme includes:
- Methods for solving problems from the exam and the marks awarded for various steps. Correct final answers receive full marks while intermediate steps receive partial marks.
- Alternative solution methods shown, with the marks broken down for each step.
- Follow through marks indicated, where a mark is awarded based on a previous answer, even if subsequent steps are incorrect.
- Common errors or omissions indicated, with instructions to examiners on deducting or not deducting marks in such cases.

This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and candidates, to indicate the requirements of
the examination. It shows the basis on which Examiners were instructed to award marks. It does not
indicate the details of the discussions that took place at an Examiners’ meeting before marking began,
which would have considered the acceptability of alternative answers.
