Comparative Criminology
One major impediment to Comparative Criminology is the fact the United States is generally an “ethnocentric” culture. Ethnocentrism is the tendency to strongly believe a group's ethnic or cultural group is centrally important and all other groups are measured in relation to that group. Ethnocentric people critically judge other groups relative to his ethnic group, culture and norms. This is especially true in relation to one’s language, behavior, customs, and religion.
Ethnocentric cultures are often not open to considering or even in some case tolerating, research or ideas that are different to the accepted norm within that culture.

The official census done by the Indonesia government reports the population of the Shia is up to one million. However the Indonesian educators find the number unreal and believe there are several million Shia in the country. Many members of the Shia community are practicing their faith in secret to protect their lives and families. After the recent violence in their communities, it is not longer possible to ask the Shia to identify themselves.
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. It has been rightly proclaimed in the American declaration of independence that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Created with certain unalienable rights….” Similarly, Indian Constitution has ensured and enshrined Fundamental rights for all citizens irrespective of caste, creed, religion, color, sex or nationality. These basic rights, commonly known as human rights, are recognized the world over as basic rights with which every individual is born.

Most killed, least covered the case of syrian shiaShiaRights
This 36 page report details violations against the Shia Muslim minority in Syria. The report is based on Interviews, site visits, news articles, NGO reports, and other human rights reports.
According to most reports more than 150 thousand people have lost their lives since 2011. Many of those belonged to different sects of Shia Islam. This publication is the first human rights report that specifically highlights Shia rights violations in Syria. The cases mentioned in this report were selected because the victims were targeted not due to the nature of war but because of their faith.
In this report read about Terror against Shia Muslims, Mass killings in Hatla, Haoula and Khan Al-ASAL, siege and displacement and also attacks to Shia clerics and shrines.
Most Killed, Least Covered: The Case of Syrian ShiaShiaRights
It is now clear that those involved in the Syrian conflict are violating all of the articles contained in the International Bill of Human
Rights. During the last three years, Syrians have witnessed crimes that have few counterparts in human history. In an age
of record-breaking advances, human rights activists continue to report the most uncivilized behavior by all parties that raises
very important questions concerning dignity and the value of human life. How many lives will it take before the international
community stands up for the rights of civilians in war zones?

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. Human Rights Watch
The Human Rights Watch is a nonprofit, international organization that researches
and works to advocate human rights. Its 400 member staff is made up of human
rights professionals including lawyers, journalists, and country experts who come
from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities. The Human Rights Watch is a
nongovernmental organization, but it does meet with governments, the United
Nations, regional groups, financial institutions, and corporations to push for
changes in policy and practice that promote human rights.
3. Research of the Human Rights Watch
The main goal of any research conducted by the Human Rights Watch is to
analyze incidents in which human rights have been violated, and thoroughly
understand the local political, social, and cultural context of the violation case.
Researchers must also frame the violation (or their subject of research) for it
relates to international human rights and humanitarian law. By analyzing the
contexts of any violation of human rights, researchers will be able to identify the
possible victims and witnesses to collect testimonies from, target all people
involved with the act of violation, and finally begin to find advocacy targets.
4. More about the Human Rights Watch
Every year, the Human Rights watch publishes over 100 reports and briefings on
human rights in about 90 countries. Many news sources rely on the reports given
by the Human Rights Watch for news and information on the violations of human
rights. When the news sources publish their stories on human rights through the
newspaper, radio, television, and internet, many people are made aware of the
current sufferings of others around the globe. Some people may even donate to
nonprofit organizations such as the Human Rights Watch in order to assist them in
their research.
6. Amnesty International
Amnesty International is another non governmental organization that works to
promote human rights across the globe. The organization looks into cases of
abusement, and exposes facts about them. Amnesty international also helps
people claim their rights be providing them with education and training.
7. Amnesty International Action
Amnesty International uses 3 main steps when fighting for human rights: research,
advocacy and lobbying, and campaigns and action. By researching into violations
of human rights by governments and others, the Amnesty International gains
information that will help support their goal of human rights for all. The next step in
advocacy and lobbying, in which the organization uses their research and analysis
of information in order to influence governments, companies, and other big
decision makers to make decisions that support the human rights movement. The
final step used by Amnesty International is the sending out of petitions, letters, and
protests to spread the word and support for human rights.
8. More about Amnesty International
Amnesty International has done research on human trafficking, and has pages on
its official website devoted to help the victims of such terrible events. The
organization has sent a testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary
Hearing on “VAWA Next Steps: Protecting Women from Gun Violence.” The
document, which is also posted on the Amnesty International webpage, provides
statistics about the occurrences of violence against women and ends with a
message strongly urging the government to take action by preventing gun
violence and protect the rights of the people.
