Winter doesn’t have to be drab and grey, spread some
colour your way with magazine’s Men’s Hairdresser
of the Year Jonathan Andrew’s guide to colour and hair
maintenance. It’s not just your car that needs an MOT
from time to time!
KEEP IT COLOURFUL
Colour has been a big deal for a while,
but this year we’ve seen massive steps
taken in the male market. Personally, I
think it’s great that so many guys are
trying out new things, rather than just
covering the grey. The irony here is
that the biggest colour trend for men
in 2016 has been grey! With so many
options, there’s no limit to what you
can do! Some guys just want subtle
highlights to add definitions, whilst
some want a total change.
If you’re considering a big change,
why not opt for a semi-permanent
colour? It gradually washes out over
time and is perfect for those who
don’t want to commit fully. The most
important thing – if you’re having colour
for the first time – is to ensure you have
a skin test.  This ensures you have no

This month, I’m putting the spotlight on James Bond
himself, Mr Daniel Craig, who’s an excellent example
of how to deal with thinning hair. The hair team for
Spectre cut his hair in a great style for his hair type,
and it’s great inspiration for those who are dealing
with hair loss; the back and sides were taken short
which automatically made the top look thicker and
fuller. One thing I will say is try and keep it soft as this
makes the style look less aggressive, giving you a
smart look for the office and a more casual look for
the weekend. The top is cut shorter at the back and
progressively gets longer towards the front which
helps disguise any problem areas. Short hair can still
look both professional and cool at the same time.
MAN OF THE MONTH GUESS
WHO’S
BEEN
IN...
This month I had
model and singer Josh
Cuthbert in the salon.
Keeping his look on
trend, we went for
a short tapered skin
fade, taking it high
then maintaining some
of the length on the
top to retain that solid
profile shape.
allergies to the colour and will help to
prevent any possible reactions. Just be
sure to visit the salon at least 24 hours
prior to the appointment.
HAIR LOSS
In men’s hairdressing, hair loss is
probably the most discussed topic
– other than how to get hair like David
Beckham! Hair loss affects many men,
but fear not, we now live in a time
where there’s a whole host of options
to combat thinning hair. Let me talk
you through some of the FAQs I get on
a daily basis:
WHAT ABOUT A TRANSPLANT?
With modern technology this is a very
feasible option but it’s costly. However,
it’s a great way to fill in your hairline
and thicken out your hair. There are
a few ways it can be done and some
of these are more painful than others,
but the results can be amazing. Find a
reputable surgeon – this isn’t the time to
scrimp on quality!
TOO COSTLY? WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
Hair transplants aren’t for everyone so
thankfully there are other ways to help
you out. Sprays and fibres are one of
the newest to market. Try MR. Jamie
Stevens Disguise Spray to add colour
to your scalp – making your hair look
thicker and fuller. The spray uses water
resistant polymers that when dry will
not run unless you physically shampoo
your hair. Apply some fibres on top
from the MR Jamie Stevens range to
finish off your look. The fibres are made
from micro shredded plant extract
which is then colour-encased in keratin
and then statically charged to help stick
to the hair. Finish with a fixing spray and
you’re good to go!
WHAT ABOUT MAINTENANCE?
The key point I make to all of my clients
is to look after their hair. Make sure you
shampoo and condition it every time
you wash it. When you’ve washed it, just
pat it dry rather than rubbing as you
risk losing more hair.

MANY HAIR-PY
RETURNS!
Men’s Room celebrates 120 years of
Pall Mall Barbers
Pall Mall Barbers is one of the oldest
and most respected barber shops in
the UK. Serving London since 1896,
the team is celebrating its 120th
anniversary this year with a series of
in-store events and customer offers.
Men’s Room
caught up with
its owner of 11
years Richard
Marshall for
an exclusive
chat about
razor sharp
barbering
and old
school
grooming...
You’ve been
established
longer than
Chelsea
Football Club – what’s the
secret of your longevity?
Always improving and raising our
standards, and balancing keeping up
with the times with being true to the
roots of Pall Mall Barbers. Techniques
adapt and it’s our job to remain up to
date with the modern man and his
needs.
How has the male grooming market
changed since you acquired the
business in 2005?
Men have been spending lots more
time and money on shaving products,
and they have proven incredibly
popular. We developed a matching
service using the product range,
and lots of
hairdressers
and barbers
are adding
the Pall Mall
Luxury Wet
Shave to their
service list
for their male
clients.
Finally, what will be the biggest
grooming trend of Winter ‘16?
It’s all about the ‘Gentleman’: the
modern man with slick, tight cuts.
Clean shaven and sharp suits, shirts
and shoes. Classicism.
As the temperatures drop many of us may
be turning up our thermostats and having
hot showers. Whilst this may seem like the
best way to ward off the winter chill it can
have detrimental effects not only on our
skin but our hair, too. The problem is that
washing strips the hair and skin of its natural
oils, resulting in brittle hair and dry, flaky skin.
To combat this opt for products containing
premium natural oils such as Sicilian olive oil
and almond oil to help nourish the hair and
soothe the skin.
Over-shampooing is also a factor in drying
out the hair. Whilst shampooing keeps beards
and hair clean, harsh shampoos can strip away
the natural oils. A mild shampoo and beard
wash will gently clean whilst helping to retain
moisture.
Keeping your beard looking great throughout
the year also requires the right tools and
product for different seasons. Invest in a high
quality aftershave product, in particular one
that can penetrate the beard and reach the
skin beneath. Look out for ingredients that
will nourish the skin such as calendula extract,
a natural remedy that helps to soothe skin
irritation which can be more prevalent in
colder weather.
It’s also important to remember to give our
beards a regular tidy up with a visit to the
barbers. Just as a split end on our head
signifies damaged hair, a split end on our
beard also indicates damage. Leaving a split
end will result in it splitting down to the follicle
and falling out, whereas trimming the damage
will keep your beard looking sharp.
Advice courtesy of BIG BOY co-founders
Andrius Vorobjovas and Massimiliano Luca
Comella. See www.forbigboys.co.uk for more
information.
HAIR FACT: When Richard acquired
PMB he was determined to offer
a traditional service in a modern
manner for the British gent and set to
bring the business back to its roots.
He traced the origin and history of
the barbers back through the ages,
finding an old business card labelled
the Pall Mall Toilet Saloon dated
around 1910. His detective work
uncovered that the barbers had other
locations around London and its own
brand of products.
