Editor's Notes
OR: LIVING
OR: The [NOT SO] Magnificent Seven!
Comment on pic: I took this just after getting douse in a thunderstorm last year at Hecla Island. Vice and virtue are sometimes, not often, very close to each other…
WHY? Simply put:
re. 2Cor 13:5 It’s a fundamental PRINCIPLE of the Christian life
Re. Sokrates: It’s corroborated by at least one famous philosopher’s PERSPECTIVE
Re. lists: let’s not play games, let’s not be duped – sin is harmful to us, to others, to our relationship with God PPT: whatever sin touches, it kills! Of course, we want to be on the guard for “morbid preoccupation with evil”!
OT/NT, Jesus & Paul
Approach is important: Eph 4…see Wiersbe for short summary below: A) you have been made new; therefore: b) BREAK completely with the past, c) Be RENEWED, d) PUT ON your new “clothing” befitting a disciple of Christ. A church can only be as powerful as it is pure! (not self-righteously pure however!) cf. Tozer quote
RE. EPH 4:17-32 Wiersbe: You have been set free from the old life through Jesus Christ (his death & resurrection secure victorious living for you!], so why live in those old sins anymore? Anything evil from the old [self-directed] life brought into your relationship with Christ gives the devil a "beachhead" (or foothold) as V 27 points out. Paul names things like lying, losing your temper, stealing, corrupt speech, bitterness and an unforgiving spirit. These sins actually become an open invitation to Satan, and they hurt you, harm the church, and grieve the Spirit of God. IS IT WORTH IT?
Metaphors:
If life is a machine, then sin is a bad gear that makes the machine malfunction.
If life is a kingdom, then sin is a terrorist movement in the kingdom.
If life is a family, then sin is a feud between family members.
If life is a body, then sin is an untreated disease that poisons the whole system.
If life is a river, then sin is mercury or arsenic that pollutes it.
If life is a garden, then sin is the army of slugs that eat your tomatoes.
If life is a computer, then sin is a virus that destroys your hard drive.
RE. BALANCE NEEDED: cf. the graphic, representing the paramedics (similar ones in other health care professions too). Interesting: based on an OT story alluded to in a famous story of the NT, in John 3…etc.
The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things is a painting attributed to Hieronymus Bosch, completed around 1500 or later. The painting is oil on wood panels. The painting is presented in a series of circular images.
