Question Number Three: (90 points)
A: Translate the following texts (A and B) into Arabic.
Text A: (25 points)
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and
ballistic missiles and "pattern of provocations" are a serious threat to Asian and world
security. North Korea released a statement later Thursday at the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations' annual conference in Cambodia saying Washington's "never-ending nuclear
threat" against the North has forced Pyongyang to build atomic weapons. Animosity runs high
after a North Korean rocket launch in April that Washington and Seoul call a cover for a
banned long-range missile test. North Korea says it was a satellite launch attempt. Clinton says
Pyongyang's new leadership should focus on its people's "needs and aspirations" so it doesn't
"fall further behind." The North's statement says its nuclear program is a deterrent that
reduces the risk of war.
Text B: (25 points)
Recent events have shown us that what sets us apart must not just be our power – it must be the
purpose behind it. In South Sudan – with our assistance – the people were finally able to vote
for independence after years of war. Thousands lined up before dawn. People danced in the
streets. One man who lost four of his brothers at war summed up the scene around him: “This
was a battlefield for most of my life. Now we want to be free.”
We saw that same desire to be free in Tunisia, where the will of the people proved more
powerful than the writ of a dictator. And tonight, let us be clear: the United States of America
stands with the people of Tunisia, and supports the democratic aspirations of all people.
(President Obama, State of the Union Address, January 25th, 2011)
