1. This project seemed overwhelming, especially since what you want to have is
much greater that what you should realistically should start with.
I don’t have a real homestead backyard to work with yet, what I have in mind
now may strongly be much different that what I am able to work with and what
I may actually end up with.
The first cluster of are what I initially thought of off the top of my head
without having to look at existing homesteads or further research these are
things I would like to have. Granted, I am likely missing a lot.
3. Describe your process and how the desired elements of your homestead are
inter-connected. I started with the basics, then I started grouping them my
areas, further more by their purpose. Kritters went on size then by purpose.
Further more, what supported the end purpose was moved over to that area.
The color coding described the items original area.
5. I have always admired trees. They are large and peaceful and essential for
human life and habitat. As I discover or specialize in various trees I believe my
Orchard list would grow.
I split out some of the trees due to their tolerance to my area of the southeast,
these would require special care, likely in a climate control greenhouse.
The garden and the animal areas of the homestead are large and will require a
lot of effort.
7. What doesn't "fit" or seems out of place?
I cut out some of the vegetables, such as squash and zucchini, those are crops I
know I don’t personally use a lot of. Directing more attention to others.
Pasture, compost, hoop house float near the garden. To expand on them I
believe I would list the kind of grasses I would plant in the pasture or perhaps a
more detailed compost area. These are larger areas that are just there and need
more attention.
8. What larger goals might be presenting themselves? The larger goals often
emerge from the categories that you created. You may want to show pictures of
your cards to illustrate the process. The larger goals are the areas on the
homestead that need to be created and supported in order to gain a final
product. My slides show the desire for a garden and orchard that produce fruits
and vegetables. Additionally a meat and dairy goal surfaced as well. All of
which require additional processing areas to achieve desirable end products for
sale or family use.
